Technical specifications

The main technical characteristics of engine oil are encrypted in the name. Below is the decryption.

  • "M" - motor oil, that is, intended for internal combustion engines.
  • "8" - viscosity class. According to the standard, lubricants with this class must have a viscosity of 7,0 to 9,3 cSt at 100°C.
  • "G2" - an oil group that determines the scope of its use. The oil of this group is intended for forced diesel engines with or without a turbine, which are prone to the formation of soot deposits. The oil is not compatible with internal combustion engines equipped with particulate filters.
  • "k" is an additional index specifying the scope. In the people, this index is usually associated with KamAZ lubricants. In fact, the way it is: in the Russian Federation, oil is most often used in the engines of KamAZ vehicles or T-701 tractors. But in general, it is suitable for any other relatively simple diesel engines of domestic and foreign production. The scope of application is limited mainly by the degree of forcing the engine and the presence of a particulate filter.

Translated into the API standard, M8G2k engine oil corresponds to the CC class. This class is currently obsolete and is not used for labeling new foreign lubricants.

The state standard for lubricants does not provide for control over some significant indicators (flash point, viscosity index, base number, etc.). And each manufacturer that manufactures or bottles M8G2k, through the use of more enriched or depleted additives, as well as taking a different base as a basis, can affect some performance characteristics.

Consider the example of Lukoil M8G2k.

  • Viscosity index - 94 units. Low rate for modern lubricants. Indicates a strong dependence of oil viscosity on temperature.
  • Base number - 6,8 mgKOH / g. Also, a low value indicates a relatively weak ability to clean the engine from sludge deposits. Paradoxically, given the recommendation for engines prone to the formation of soot build-up. There are oils of the same standard according to GOST, but with other indicators of the base number.
  • Flash point - 233°C. High score. It speaks of a theoretically low tendency for oil to burn out in cylinders.
  • Pour point - -30°C. Also quite high. The oil is suitable for use in most regions of Russia.

It is worth noting such a parameter as the ash content of the oil. Lukoil M8G2k has a declared sulfate ash content of 0,98% by weight. That is, this oil belongs to the class of medium-ash lubricants.

Manufacturers and prices

The cost of M8G2k motor oils, depending on the manufacturer and the seller's margin, varies within 90 rubles per 1 liter. Below we analyze the most massive manufacturers of these oils in the Russian markets.

  1. Rosneft M8G2k. Relatively expensive option. A canister of 20 liters will cost 2100 rubles, that is, 105 rubles per 1 liter. It is also sold in canisters of a smaller volume, as well as in barrels.
  2. Gazpromneft M8G2k. The largest manufacturer of this oil. A barrel of 205 liters, depending on the region and the seller, costs from 15 thousand rubles (76 rubles per 1 liter). When buying oil in cans, the price of a liter will increase. For example, the average cost of a 4-liter Gazpromneft canister is 450-500 rubles.
  3. Lukoil M8G2k. The cost of one liter is highly dependent on the volume. For example, a barrel of 205 liters can be purchased for 15 thousand rubles (73 rubles per liter). At the same time, a canister with a volume of 50 liters will cost 5 thousand rubles (100 rubles / liter).

Motor oil M8G2k is also found in draft unbranded form. The cost of such oils is about 10-15% lower. However, there is usually no guarantee of the quality of the composition. The same situation is observed with other GOST oils, such as M10Dm and M8Dm.
