MAZ 5335

MAZ 5335 is a Soviet truck, which was produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant in 1977-1990.

The history of the model is closely connected with the Yaroslavl Motor Plant. It was his development that formed the basis of the MAZ 200, the production of which continued until 1957. This series was replaced by the legendary MAZ 500, which became the basis for a large number of modifications. At that time, most trucks were built according to the classical scheme: an engine, a control system and a cab were installed on the frame, after which a body was mounted on the remaining space. To increase its volume, the frame had to be lengthened. However, changing conditions required different approaches. The new series used a different scheme, when the engine was located under the cab, which, if necessary, leaned forward.

Serial production of the MAZ 500 began in 1965, after which the model was repeatedly updated by the Minsk Automobile Plant. For several years, specialists have been preparing a new car, taking into account the wishes of consumers. In 1977, an onboard version of the MAZ 5335 appeared. Externally, the car practically did not differ from the MAZ 500A (a modified version of the MAZ 500), but inside the changes were significant (separate braking system, new elements, improved comfort). In order to comply with European standards in the production version, the design had to be changed. The grille of the MAZ 5335 has become wider, the headlights have moved to the bumper, and the sunroofs have been abandoned. The platform has become more reliable and durable.

Later, minor modifications were made to the model. In 1988, the Minsk Automobile Plant opened the production of new generation MAZ 5336 trucks, but the MAZ 5335 series remained on the assembly line until 1990.

  •  MAZ 5335 - basic flatbed truck (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 5334 - chassis of the basic modification MAZ 5335, used to install superstructures and special bodies (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 53352 is a modification of MAZ 5335 with an extended base (5000 mm) and increased load capacity (up to 8400 kg). The car was equipped with a more powerful YaMZ-238E unit and an improved 8-speed gearbox (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 533501 - special version of MAZ 5335 for the northern regions (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 516B is a three-axle version of the MAZ 5335 with the possibility of lifting the third axle. The model was equipped with a 300-horsepower unit YaMZ 238N (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 5549 - a dump truck of the MAZ 5335 modification, produced in 1977-1990;
  •  MAZ 5429 - truck tractor (1977-1990);
  •  MAZ 509A is a wooden conveyor based on MAZ 5335. The car was produced from 1978 to 1990.

Engine

The basis for the MAZ 5335 series was the Yaroslavl diesel unit YaMZ 236 with direct fuel injection and liquid cooling. The 6-cylinder 12-valve engine has earned the title of one of the most successful Soviet engines. The V-shaped arrangement of cylinders (in 2 rows at an angle of 90 degrees) provided a more rational layout and reduced engine weight. Another feature of YaMZ 236 was the simplicity of design and high maintainability.

Characteristics of the YaMZ 236 unit:

  •  working volume - 11,15 liters;
  •  rated power - 180 hp;
  •  maximum torque - 667 Nm;
  •  compression ratio - 16,5;
  •  average fuel consumption - 22 l / 100 km;
  •  service life before overhaul: up to 400 km.

For some modifications of the MAZ 5335, other engines were used:

  • YaMZ-238E - V-shaped 8-cylinder engine with turbocharging and liquid cooling. Displacement - 14,86 liters, power - 330 hp, maximum torque - 1274 Nm;
  • YaMZ-238N is an 8-cylinder unit with a turbine designed for installation on a special chassis. Displacement - 14,86 liters, power - 300 hp, maximum torque - 1088 Nm.

MAZ 5335 has a design similar to MAZ 550A. Front engine and rear-wheel drive increase the cross-country ability of the machine. The car is built on the basis of a 4 by 2 wheel scheme, but is equipped with extended front springs and modified telescopic shock absorbers. Due to this, unloaded vehicles confidently keep a straight lane when driving. Other design innovations include a redesigned rear axle, designed in such a way that by changing the number of teeth on the wheel gears and tire sizes, the gear ratio can be changed.

All modifications use a 5-speed manual gearbox YaMZ-236 with synchronizers in 2, 3, 4 and 5 gears and a 3-way scheme. The use of a 2-plate dry clutch in the transmission ensures smooth and precise shifting. The gear ratio of the main pair is 4,89. The main gear has planetary gears in the wheel hubs. The shift lever is located on the floor to the right of the driver's seat. The new gearbox made it possible to increase the service life of the machine up to 320 km and reduce the labor intensity of maintenance.

MAZ 5335 turned out to be one of the first products of the Minsk Automobile Plant with a 2-circuit brake system, supplemented with a split-shaft drive. The innovation had a positive impact on traffic safety and allowed to increase speed. The braking system was still based on drum mechanisms.

The design of the MAZ 5335 has been modified to meet international requirements. Headlights were installed in the bumper niches, which improved the illumination of the space in front of the car. Thanks to the new layout, dazzling drivers of oncoming vehicles did not occur. The direction indicators have retained their original location, and the radiator grille has changed, increasing in size.

The 3-seater cabin was quite spacious, although it provided a minimum of comfort. The seats were mounted on springs that compensate for the vibrations that occur when driving through bumps. For the driver's seat, it was possible to adjust the distance to the front panel and adjust the angle of the backrest. Behind the chairs it was possible to equip a bunk bed. The air conditioner was not installed on the MAZ 5335, so in hot weather the only salvation was to open the windows. The heater was listed in the basic version and was very efficient. With him, the driver of the car is not afraid of even severe frosts. The presence of power steering made it easier to control. The steering mechanism had its own oil tank with a capacity of 5 liters.

The body of the MAZ 5335 has undergone significant changes. A platform with metal sides was installed on the machine (previously wooden sides were used). However, the poor quality of the metal and paint caused the rapid appearance of corrosion.

Price new and used

There are no used models for sale. Since the production of the car was completed in 1990, it is currently problematic to purchase equipment in good condition. The cost of a used MAZ 5335 on the go is in the range of 80-400 thousand rubles.
