Mazda CX-5 CD 180 Revolution TopAWD AT – More Than Repairs

The second edition Mazda CX-5 is one of those cars where we can only see at a glance that it's actually more than just a modified mask. The Japanese were probably so happy with the look of the car (and so are we) that they didn't seem to demand revolutionary changes from the designers. The only revolution we see here is the equipment label. However, Mazda decided that their latest global hit needed such a major overhaul that they could call it the new Mazda CX-5. There are many changes, but as mentioned, you won't find them at a glance.

I will list what Mazda marketers pointed out: quite a few components were added or changed to the body and chassis, the body was strengthened, the steering gear, shock absorbers and brakes were updated, which improved two things: handling and less noise from the wheels. With the added G-Vectoring Control, which is a Mazda specialty, they provide even better driving stability when accelerating. There are quite a few more things, but really it's about improvements and little things that together bring only a good end result. These are, for example, changing the direction of the hood, which now allows you to reduce the flow of wind through the wipers, or replacing the windshields with more acoustically better ones. There has been a lot more new in the field of electronic technology, where of course there has been a lot of innovation since 2012 when the first generation of the CX-5 came out. They brought them together under the i-Activsense Technology label. It is based on an automatic emergency braking system that works up to 80 kilometers per hour, and also recognizes pedestrians. Also new are the LED headlights with automatic beam control and the washer system. There is also a new projection screen on the driver's side of the dashboard. A few more of these beautiful accessories are available for the CX-5 - if it has the same equipment as ours.

All of this makes a good impression when we drive this Mazda on the road, but we still haven't been able to find any noticeable changes in terms of driving and performance. But this does not mean that this is an average car, on the contrary, the first generation was certainly one of the best in its class. It is also worth noting the solid quality of the interior finish: the higher the quality of the materials, the lower the quality of the finish. The usability is also good. Mazda claims they've also improved the quality of the seats, but unfortunately we haven't had a chance to compare old and new and we can only take our word for it. The slightly larger center screen (seven inches) is an improvement for Mazda, but its competitors boast a larger and much more modern interface design. They are a rotary knob that certainly makes it safer to find menus than flipping through the screen (I am writing this comment even if it makes young members of the editorial board think I am an outdated conservative who does not go against modern smartphone navigation! ). You can also add a comment about the usability of the navigator (stale data, slow response).

It's worth noting that the tailgate lift is now assisted by electricity, that the sound from the Bose audio system is solid, that the CX-5 also has two USB ports for rear passengers, so we can save gloves for a comfortable grip in the winter - there is heating.

Less cute were the very outdated buttons on the left under the dashboard for opening the fuel filler flap and trunk, we also missed the fact that it is no longer possible to close the windshield with a remote key that we can forget to close, as previous Mazda cars already knew!

While the engine and drive unit haven't undergone a lot of upgrades, this in no way detract from the good experience. The combination of a larger four-cylinder turbo diesel (2,2 liters with more power) and an automatic transmission seems very pleasant and provides satisfactory handling. Four-wheel drive also works very well (despite the fact that the car is not designed for rallying). The Mazda CX-5 also performed well with satisfactory road holding and slightly inferior driving comfort. This (also traditionally) is provided by the large wheel size (19 inches), which impairs comfort on bad roads and in the event of sudden short bumps on asphalt, bridge joints or other places.

A bit of surprise is also the way of thinking of Mazda designers that does not approach users: all special settings related to electronic gadgets are reset to initial values when the engine is turned off, fortunately, at least this does not happen. to cruise control.

The new CX-5 now has to deal with quite a few new competitors, the biggest of which are by far the Tiguan, Ateca and Kuga. Somehow in this price range the prices for new items also move, but, of course, it should be noted that all thanks to such a well-equipped car like the CX-5, with the richest equipment of Revolution Top. This one is also very "best" for the price, ie.

Overall rating (349/420)

  • The developers of the second edition of the CX-5 listened to numerous comments from testers and other users of the first and significantly improved it, although the appearance remained practically unchanged.

  • Exterior (14/15)

The resemblance to the predecessor is an excellent but convincing continuation of the family line.

  • Interior (107/140)

Some interesting accessories create a pleasant atmosphere, a small center screen replaces a projection screen in front of the driver, ample rear space and added trunk usability.

  • Engine, transmission (56

    / 40)

Engine and transmission are a compelling combination, as is all-wheel drive.

  • Driving performance (59

    / 95)

Suitable position on the road, but slightly large wheels to show the car comfortably.

  • Performance (27/35)

The power is more than enough to ensure well-being in all driving conditions.

  • Security (41/45)

It meets high safety standards with optional electronic assistants.

  • Economy (45/50)

The price advantage and excellent warranty and mobile warranty conditions are slightly offset by higher average consumption and an uncertain expectation of loss in value.
