Mazda CX-7 CD173 Challenge

I don’t know why we at the editorial office didn’t pay attention to the updated design of the Mazda CX-7. Either due to our inattention (I would say that earlier overload, but let's leave it as it is), too little advertised product, or simply too few changes - who knows.

It just so happened that some of us were horrified when we took over the test CX-7, saying what's new about this car, aside from the modern turbodiesel, which (finally!) Also went under the deck of the CX.

Five-way test - why already? Then I came across photographs of the old man and compared them with the newcomer. Oh, gentlemen, let's get back, there are a lot more changes than could be immediately attributed to the new CX-7.

front part The car has received some features of the family design, the newest bumper, the tires are now equipped with aluminum rims of various shapes, and the body is decorated with new colors.

The fact that Mazda CX-7 still looks sporty among "soft SUVs" (more precisely, urban ones, since men, in principle, do not like this word) can already be seen from the leading photo of our Alyosha. Nothing revolutionary, but enough to keep the CX-7 going for a few more years until they release a new car.

It's a similar story inside... If you didn't have a petrol version (others didn't), or if you haven't moved from old to new in the cabin, then you feel like the CX-7 has always been that way. But this is not the case.

It's new steering wheel, for which the time has come, since it is unreasonably more comfortable for the driver due to ergonomics, as well as a good stock with convenient buttons for radio, cruise control and on-board computer, new upholstery, a different form of sensors and materials should be more prestigious.

With the steering wheel and sensors, Mazda hit the ground and the covers and materials could have been more original. We will not argue that they are not of good quality or even that they are unpleasant or ugly, but we also disagree with the statement that they are prestigious. At least not with Challenge equipment, which is the middle ground between Emotion, Challenge and Revolution equipment.

The materials are too dark, not very expressive and not too prestigious to the touch, which would make motorists shudder. While Mazda boasts sporty prestige, I would say earlier that they are completely on the sporty side.

Just look at the new sensorswith a poisonous red color and rounded shapes with deep notches, as well as the center console and the installation of two screens at the top ensure that it is the dynamics of the form that will increase the pressure on sensitive passengers.

The only (design) drawback is an additional screen at the top of the center console, which provides the driver with information about fuel consumption, events behind the car (camera) and - with better equipment - navigation hosts. It's too big for the trip computer and acts like a designer alien, it's most useful for the camera and clearly too small for navigation.

It looks like the designers said the main thing about the size, and then the technicians had to fill this screen with something. The lack of common sense is also evidenced by the choice of electronic parking facilities. V Test Equipment you even get a rearview camera, and the main sensors are included in the accessory list.

In the test case, we had the sensor and camera on the back, and nothing on the front. Error. The Mazda CX-7 is not a transparent car, let alone a small one that could do without sensors in crowded city parking lots. You can take a chance, but believe me, the last word on the curves of the body will not be up to Mazda designers. .

He is great driving position, with the exception of a slightly taller shift lever, only a less suitable part of the seat gets in the way. I don't know how Mazda's designers managed to make the long seat fit perfectly (500mm is pretty much standard on these cars, so the CX-7 is completely equivalent to its competitors) when it feels like a third less.

Maybe the tilt is to blame for this misleading feeling, as the seat is probably too low towards the front? It would be difficult to sort out the problem, but we can say that smaller drivers will sit better in the Mazda CX-7, who will not be so worried about the "too short" part of the seat. Don't be fooled by the latest entries:

The Mazda CX-7 may not be as prestigious and sophisticated as some think, but it can also please your heart due to minor flaws that they looked for with a magnifying glass. In fact, he is right sport racingespecially because of the tilt of the windshield (the A-pillar rises at a 66 degree angle!), toxic dynamic instruments and a beautiful steering wheel, as well as convenience for the whole family.

The higher threshold provides a comfortable entry for the elderly, a high position, a sense of security and transparency, and ample space in both the passenger compartment and trunk, adds a pinch that purebred athletes usually lack.

Even behind the wheel, Mazda seems to have taken on the most dynamic role models. We are talking about the BMW X3, Honda CR-V and others who love corners, but despite the new shock absorbers, Mazda did not want to sacrifice comfort. Since the sport will never be comfortable (hmm, only air suspension at the most prestigious level), Mazda made a compromise.

Unlike the petrol version (remember the 2-liter turbo engine with 3 "horsepower"), the turbodiesel has electro-hydraulic power steering, which is more pampering in parking lots than in mountain ranges. It's the same with the chassis (McPherson struts in the front and multi-link in the back), since you don't have to go to a chiropractor to drive through the holes, but you won't feel like a button in the formula, even in the corners.

Transmission it's good, maybe a little sensitive to cold, but once the oil heats up it's fast enough even for the more determined right of the more demanding driver.

Mazda, like Subaru, spent a lot of time presenting it. turbodiesel engine... Too much, definitely. But while Subaru's excuse was that they wanted to create a modern four-cylinder boxer engine that was much more refined than the classic inline-four, Mazda hasn't presented anything new in theory.

In fact, the 2-litre turbodiesel engine is just a combination of the latest technologies that are now “trendy” due to less pollution and nothing more. The engine boasts Common Rail direct injection (2 nozzles, pressure up to 10 MPa!), a new turbocharger with a modified blade geometry and an aftercooler. All together it is packed in aluminum alloy.

The compensation shaft provides less noise and the double camshaft (DOHC) is chain driven for easy maintenance.

Some originality manifested itself only in Exhaust systembecause the CX-7 has a new Mazda Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system in addition to the diesel particulate filter, which reduces NOx emissions (converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water) and thus meets Euro 5 environmental standards. let's just say that up to 95 percent of the Mazda CX-7 can be recycled or reused.

Mazda's urban SUV also has serial four-wheel drive... Basically, the engine drives only the front wheels (lower fuel consumption), and, if necessary, the electronics distributes up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels. The system is automatically controlled by a number of sensors such as steering wheel angle, wheel speed, lateral acceleration and valve position, so the driver does not need to connect additional 4x4s.

Of course, the weak point of such a system is the nose of the car, which, when overloaded, kicks you out of the turn, and on the ground you will be slowed down by shoes (more suitable for road jungle) and the distance from the ground (a little less than 21 centimeters).

So common sense applies: an urban SUV is more suited to track riding than extreme hills, and even when it snows, keep in mind that you need to stop 1 ton (empty car weight with medium heavy driver).

It is always easier to get to the top than back to the valley, although the standard ABS, EBD, DSC and TCS systems help the inexperienced. And as a curiosity: due to the greater weight, the stronger petrol sibling has 23 mm less rear wheels!

A good price, attractiveness after a design update and ease of use are the trump cards that even the ignorant (I would say overloaded, inattentive, superficial?) cannot fail to notice in this car. The inattentive will regret one day.

Face to face. ...

Dusan Lukic: When we first tested the CX-7 years ago, with a turbocharged gasoline engine in the nose, I confess I was quite impressed. An SUV that can pull like a sports car (and therefore also advertise and behave) without sacrificing usability. Yes, it had a manual transmission, but okay, with a 260-horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine, that's understandable. Sports utility vehicle.

Ease of use remains with the fresh CX-7, but the combination of a four-cylinder diesel vibrator that's louder than powerful and a manual transmission is a shot in the arm. Lots of manual isolation and good automation would at least justify this Mazda's completely average performance. CX-7? Yep, but only turbocharged.

Saša Kapetanovič: The Japanese have been entering the European market for quite some time with the gasoline version of the CX-7. And when they felt a lot of customer sympathy, they finally introduced the diesel version. As the test team leader, I must answer you why Mazda accelerated nearly two seconds better than the factory data in our measurements. But I really can't find it. But I know the engine bounces well when it's at the right rpms. It lacks a tiny bit of responsiveness when it comes to accelerating without downshifting. The minus of the mini is only one-stage seat heating.

Overall rating (347/420)

  • He flirts a little with sportiness, he wants to please with comfort and equipment, and at the same time wants to be useful. A little bit of everything, but not everyone can be satisfied. In short, the Mazda CX-7 is a good compromise without going to extremes.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Harmonious, dynamic, in principle beautiful and well-made.

  • Interior (99/140)

Good ergonomics (no seats), quality materials (though they work cheaply), good equipment and a sporty environment.

  • Engine, transmission (54

    / 40)

Indirect power steering, drivetrain and chassis good enough to meet needs quickly and at a leisurely pace.

  • Driving performance (60

    / 95)

In terms of pedals, they were a bit similar to Audi (in terms of gas-to-grip ratio), a slightly taller gear lever, a secure position on the road.

  • Performance (32/35)

Acceleration is even significantly better than factory acceleration, and with flexibility it is known that the engine gets lazy in fifth and sixth gear.

  • Security (50/45)

It has everything you need to ensure safety, but nothing more.

  • Economy

Average fuel consumption and warranty, excellent base model price.
