Mazda6 1.8 TE

That the Mazda6 has undergone its first small update in just three years is no surprise (and therefore "already" a bit redundant). The competition is fierce, and this Japanese manufacturer's design guidelines have changed quite a bit over the past three years. The masks of his cars are now more accentuated, with more chrome and an enlarged brand logo - so of course the updated six also got one. So you don't have to worry about other exterior changes: check out the chrome trim and new front bumper cutouts, slightly different (and much more pleasing to the eye) taillights. Nothing special and, in fact, invisible to the uninitiated - but still effective.

Some other changes are more welcome: Mazda has finally gotten rid of the ugly key with a separate pendant for the remote control - now the key is quite large, but foldable. The driver and passengers will also be satisfied with better plastics, and the driver with slightly richer equipment. The Test Six had a TE mark (which is also our country's best-selling equipment package), which means that Mazda added a rain sensor and fog lights to everything the "old" six offered drivers - but, unfortunately, in this one in the package no alloy wheels yet. And then the otherwise very pleasant image of the car is spoiled by ugly plastic lining on black steel wheels. Sad.

For the rest (besides the mentioned changes and some other things) Mazda6 remained Mazda6 even after repairs. It still sits well behind the wheel (aiming for slightly longer forward travel for the front seats, especially the driver's seat), the multifunction three-position steering wheel rests comfortably in the hand, and the five-speed manual transmission lever still proves this. Mazda knows what gear shifting is.

A keen ear (and our measuring device) finds that there is slightly less noise inside, especially from under the wheels and under the hood. Yes, noise isolation is something more, and it is very welcome. And on a more paved or more winding road, the situation remains good, and the suspension is set to an acceptable compromise between comfort and sportiness. The body of the new Šestica is stiffer than before the rejuvenation, but you won't notice it behind the wheel, because the increased body rigidity is primarily for safety.

This time, the smallest change was in the mechanics. The 1-liter engine (the only one in the range) remained completely unchanged, as did the five-speed manual transmission. This is why the Mazda8 drives just like its big sister. This is not a bad thing, as we praised its predecessor. And this is still true: this transmission is, in principle, sufficient, but no more.

evaluation

  • Minor tweaks didn't change the character of the Mazda6, the 1,8-litre engine being an acceptable base choice but nothing more. For anything more, you will have to go to a more powerful gas station or one of the diesels.

We praise and reproach

no light frames

insufficient longitudinal displacement of the front seats
