Hyundai/Kia

The gas distribution system in the operation of the engine is of decisive importance, since, thanks to synchronization, the fuel supply, ignition, operation of the piston group and the exhaust system are synchronized.

Korean engines, depending on the series, also have different drives. So, the G4EE engine belongs to the Alpha II series, it runs on a belt drive. Replacing the timing belt with a Kia Rio 2nd generation can be a preventive measure planned in accordance with the terms of maintenance or a forced measure if it is damaged or missed.

The Kia Rio 2 has a G4EE engine, so the description of how to change the timing is correct for these engines.

G4EE time unit

The rules say: the timing belt of the Kia Rio 2 is replaced when the odometer reaches sixty thousand new ones or every four years, depending on which of these conditions is met earlier.

With the Kia Rio 2 belt, it is also convenient to change the tensioner, otherwise, if it breaks, the newly replaced belt will be damaged.

The entire operation on the Kia Rio is carried out on a pit or with the help of lifting equipment.

The timing belt G4EE is replaced if there are signs of wear:

We change the drive of the gas distribution mechanism Kia Rio 2

Before working with the 2nd generation Kia Rio timing drive (G4EE engine), it is necessary to remove the fixing clamps.

Dismantling the alternator and air conditioning belts

The initial task when replacing a belt on a 2009 Kia Rio is to prepare access to the part to be replaced. For this you need:

  1. Unscrew the generator anchor, pull out the tensioner with the nut. Unscrew the generator anchor, pull out the lanyard with the nut (link to image source)
  2. Press lightly to move the generator. Force the Kia Rio 2 generator into the cylinder block (link)
  3. Remove the belt. Remove the belt from the alternator pulleys, water pump and engine crankshaft. (Link)
  4. Reset the wheel and the side of the engine housing.Change the timing belt on Kia Rio 2

Reset the wheel and the side of the engine housing.
  5. Loosen the central nut of the compressor belt tensioner. Just let go without receiving it completely. Loosen the central nut of the compressor belt tensioner. (Link)
  6. Loosen and remove the belt by turning the side lock. Turn the adjusting screw to loosen the belt as much as possible, and remove the belt from the crankshaft pulleys and the A/C compressor. (Link)

So the first stage of changing the G4EE gas distribution unit has been completed.

Pulley removal

The next step in replacing the timing belt on a 2008 Kia Rio is to remove the gear.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. From the bottom of the engine, from the side of the "pants" of the muffler, unscrew the bolts, remove the metal shield from the clutch. Do not unscrew the engine tray!
  2. Secure the crankshaft from turning with any long object between the flywheel teeth and the crankcase. Secure the crankshaft from turning with any elongated object. (Link)
  3. Relax the pulley by unscrewing the screw. This action is more convenient to perform with an assistant. Relax the pulley by unscrewing the screw. (Link)
  4. Completely unscrew, remove the screw, lock washer. Completely unscrew the fixing bolt (1), then remove it and remove it together with the washer. Also remove the Kia Rio 2 crankshaft pulley (2). (Link)
  5. Unscrew, remove the pulley bolts from the mounted auxiliary units of the Kia Rio.

Almost all the preparatory work has been completed, now we have made further progress in changing the Kia Rio 2 gas distribution unit.

Dismantling the cover and timing belt Kia Rio 2

Further, to change the transmission on the Kia Rio 2, the protective covers are removed to access the G4EE timing belt.

Additional algorithm:

  1. Remove fastenings from the right pillow of the engine. Remove Right Transmission Hanger Bracket (link)
  2. Unscrew, remove the top cover. We unscrew the four screws that hold the top cover and remove the cover (link)
  3. Unscrew, remove the cover from the bottom. Remove the three screws holding the bottom cover and remove the cover by pulling it down (link)
  4. Move the first piston to the top position until the gear marks meet. Rotate the crankshaft by engaging the gear and turning the freewheel.
  5. Loosen the adjusting bolts and the timing belt tensioner. Loosen adjuster bolt (B) and countershaft bracket shaft bolt (A) (ref.)
  6. Use a long object (screwdriver) to fix the timing chain tensioner, loosen the belt by turning it counterclockwise and remove it. To reinstall, lock the bracket in the leftmost position. Insert a screwdriver between the idler bracket and its axle bolt, turn the idler bracket counterclockwise, loosen the belt tension, and then remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley (link to image source)
  7. Remove the timing belt by pulling it in the opposite direction of the engine. Remove the belt by pulling it away from the engine
  8. Using a metal shovel, remove the springy edges of the seat tensioner. Using a bench tool, remove the spring lips from the seat tensioner assembly (link)

To remove the Kia Rio timing belt, do not turn the shafts, otherwise the marks will break.

Installing the timing drive by labels

At this stage, the most critical part of replacing the timing belt for the Kia Rio 2007 is being carried out: the steps to install a new one, setting the G4EE timing marks.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Unscrew, remove the fixing screws, remove the tensioning mechanism, spring.
  2. Check the smoothness of tightening the tensioner, in case of clogging, prepare another one.
  3. Install the tensioner, put on the belt in turn: crankshaft pulley, central roller, tensioner, at the end - camshaft pulley. The right side will be in tension.
  4. If the tension assembly has not been removed, loosen the fixing screw, under the action of the spring, the entire structure with the belt will take the correct position.Change the timing belt on Kia Rio 2

Push the shaft through the top eye of the pulley twice, make sure that the green and red marks converge, the line of the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the “T” symbol
  5. Push the shaft twice through the lug in the upper pulley, make sure that the green and red marks are aligned, the line of the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the “T” symbol. If not, repeat steps 3 to 5 until the marks match.

Checking the tension and completing the replacement

The final step in replacing the timing belt for Kia Rio 2 is to check and install in their places all the elements of the G4EE timing drive and the removed components. Sequencing:

  1. Put your hand on the tensioner, tighten the belt. When properly adjusted, the teeth will not converge past the middle of the tensioner adjusting bolt.
  2. Fasten the tensioner bolts.
  3. Return all items to their places, install in the reverse order of removal.
  4. Pull the straps on all items.

Conclusion

If there are even slight signs of unstable engine operation, suspicious noises, knocks, buzzing or knocking of valves, pay attention to the condition of the ignition timing and ignition timing indicators.

With a clear understanding of the process, a little skill, you can replace the second generation Kia Rio timing belt with your own hands, saving on service work and gaining experience that will be useful to a motorist.
