We change the handbrake cables on Lada Kalina
Content
To prevent the handbrake from failing at the most inopportune moment, it must be periodically adjusted and timely repaired. One of the important elements of the parking brake are the cables, which eventually become unusable and require replacement.
You can do this yourself, without contacting the service station.
Replacement algorithm on Kalina
For work, they carried Kalina to a viewing hole, raised the back and removed the wheels.
Removal and installation of parking brake cables is carried out in several stages:
- We remove the guards from the brake drums, the protective screen and unscrew the lock nut.
The protective screen is fastened with nuts on the studs.
It is better to remove the muffler from the rubber bands. - We disassemble the stem adjusting screw. We remove the equalizer from the wires.
Walnuts, circled in red, must first be doused with penetrating fat. - We remove the earring from the brake cable located on the left rear wheel. To do this, use a flat screwdriver.
Remove the end of the cable from the brake lever. - We take a 10 wrench and unscrew the nut on the handle that holds the cable to the rear suspension arm. Then carefully disconnect the cable. Remove the second element in the same way.
We recommend spraying the HD bolts on the rear beam.
Studs often break and without them it is problematic to fix a new cable. - We install new cables and assemble the knot.
We cling to the end of the cable for the lever.
We stretch the rope below.
We insert the cables into the clamps and tighten the nuts.
When the system is assembled, it remains only to adjust the stroke of the handbrake.
When to change
It's easy to spot problems with the parking brake. To do this, drive the car uphill and put on the parking brake. If the car starts to roll, then wires are needed here.
Another sign of a malfunction is the presence of rubbing sounds that occur when the brake drum contacts the pads while the car is moving.
The parking brake cables tend to stretch differently, so there is a distortion and the pads begin to expand unevenly.
The main reasons for the malfunction can be:
- Natural wear of parts. Over time, the surface of the drum brake wears out and needs to be replaced.
- A vehicle failure with the handbrake applied while the vehicle is moving, resulting in increased pad wear.
- Breakage of the cable or wear of other parts of the parking brake.Damage to the sheath leads to rapid wear of the cable.
In the latter case, no cable replacement is required. In some cases, simply pulling it is enough. If it is already raised to the maximum mark, it will have to be replaced.
Handle position
The correct position is in three clicks.
No need to pull hard on the handle. Gently pull up to the third click. In this position, the handbrake should hold the car.
