Changing engine oil just because winter is coming? "No, but…"

Changing engine oil just because winter is coming? "No, but…" Modern motor oils - semi-synthetic and synthetic - also work well in winter. Therefore, frost should not cause an acceleration of the oil change time. Except mineral oil.

Mechanics say that engine oil needs to be changed every 10-15 thousand. km or once a year, whichever comes first. The season of the year doesn't really matter here, especially with modern lubricants.

– For currently used oils, especially those based on synthetic or semi-synthetic, the limit of their optimal performance is about minus forty degrees Celsius, says Tomasz Mydlowski from the Faculty of Automobiles and Working Machines of the Warsaw University of Technology.

Therefore, it is important to maintain the correct oil level (in winter, about half the level on the dipstick) and to observe the oil change intervals. There is no point in overclocking it, unless our car is running on mineral oil. According to prof. Andrzej Kulczycki from Cardinal Stefan Wyshinsky University chemist, the properties of this oil deteriorate at low temperatures.

But changing the engine oil too frequently can be harmful: – The oil “runs in” during the initial period of operation. If we change it too often, we work for a long time with an oil that has not fully adapted to this engine,” adds prof. Kulchitsky.
