Mercedes-Benz A 160 CDI Classic

Let's start with the engine. Well, in the beginning we were a little upset because the engine in the test model is not the smallest in terms of volume. It's undercut by at least two petrol A versions (A 150 and A 170), but it is undoubtedly the weakest in the Mercedes car lineup. This is confirmed by the data on 60 kilowatts or 82 horsepower and a staggering 180 Newton-meters of maximum torque.

Perhaps the written data on engine performance does not paint a sufficiently convincing picture of the slowest vehicle mentioned, since it is only 3 meters long, and also the smallest member of the family with a three-pointed star on the nose. but the scales still show kilograms of the baby's own weight. That the A 84 CDI is one of the least agile on the road is also proven by the fact that the engine never surprises with the Newton-meter blast that catapults a toddler past a slow truck or other slow trucks. On the contrary, a two-liter grinder (engine size 1300 cm160) convinces mainly with its quietness and calmness, and, compared to most modern turbodiesels, also with sophistication.

Poor flexibility makes the A 160 CDI feel every slope before you even notice it. Every extra pound of weight in the cabin or trunk will feel the same. You might think we are exaggerating, but the fact is that to accelerate more, or at least maintain speed on steep slopes, you will have to downshift at least one gear, and maybe even two.

It is true, however, that the weakest A turbodiesel will be compensated not only by its sophistication, but also by its economy, since we can say with confidence that the A 160 CDI is the most economical Mercedes. Thus, in the best case (more than 90 percent of motorways and intercity roads), we managed to reduce the average consumption of diesel fuel to just 5 liters per hundred kilometers, with an average consumption of about 6 liters per hundred kilometers. With that in mind, you can also go on a journey of just over 6 kilometers without having to stop to refuel in the meantime.

We have already mentioned that A is the smallest Mercedes, but this does not mean that you will be as cramped as possible in it.

In no case! There are enough heights and widths of measured centimeters everywhere, but in most cases it is the same in length. If the front seats are occupied by two selfish two-seater passengers who do not care about the centimeters of the rear passengers' knees, then there is no luxury in the back, like, say, passengers in the extended S class. Remember, we are talking about a car that is 1 meter shorter than the flagship Mercedes.

Some displeasure is caused by the three-door retraction system for the front seats, which makes it easier for passengers to access the rear seat. The system is limited to a relatively short longitudinal forward movement, which forces passengers to be more resourceful and agile, especially when exiting, and, in addition, the spring holding the front seat back in the upside-down position is too strong. ... As a result, the driver or front passenger must push or pull the backrest relatively hard, returning the backrest to its original position.

In the Classic A version it also ranks among the most plucked three-pointed stars. So you can only dream of leather, navigation, automatic air conditioning, telephone and other sweets, collected in the list of standard equipment. But you can think about them. The trick is just how willing you are to open your wallet, because Mercedes (almost) don't know the word no. So they will be happy to hear your desire to make the most successful A the most prestigious.

Of course, the Classic equipment package, despite the list of standard equipment taken by Mercedes standards, also caters for some more or less coveted items. We will name only the most important of them. Semi-automatic air conditioning, (non-switchable) ESP with ASR, ABS brake with BAS, four front airbags, remote control for central locking, electric front windows, trip computer and much more.

In line with Mercedes' strategy, the car's base price is also "best". Since we started testing this Mercedes, we are still finishing it. The 160 CDI Classic is not the cheapest among Mercedes, but it immediately takes the second place. Again, it is "undermined" by the weakest petrol engine A 150 Classic. Despite the fact that we're talking about the two cheapest A's, we are talking about a sum of 4 million tolar (A 78 CDI), which is a lot of money for a 160 meter car, three doors and 3 lazy kilowatts of engine power. ...

When buying a Mercedes, customers (usually) know what they are getting into, so they are most likely ready to empty their bank account profusely. Therefore, we strongly recommend that if you are already looking at Turbodiesel A, look at at least the 180 CDI version.

evaluation

  • If you already want the A diesel, look for a model with slightly more horsepower and torque than the A 160 CDI. We offer 180 CDI. 200 CDI is not defended, but this fat million is more expensive than the two weaker versions.
