Mercedes-Benz EQS 2022: Infotainment issue causes recall

Mercedes-Benz EQS has a malfunctioning infotainment system that displays TV programs and the Internet. This can distract the driver and lead to a terrible accident.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a fine example of design and engineering. The flagship-level luxury sedan, which happens to be all-electric, offers a host of upgrades and more features than you might imagine. Unfortunately, some of these advanced technologies have been withdrawn.

What is the problem with the infotainment system?

On November 29, the automaker reported a software-related safety issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The issue affects some vehicles with an active and connected "Mercedes Me" account.

The problem is that the MBUX infotainment system may allow TV or Internet programs to be displayed on the internal screen while the vehicle is in motion, which can be very distracting for the driver. And we all know what it can do. Yes, shocks, but nobody needs it.

How many cars were damaged?

The good news is that only a handful of vehicles are affected by this issue, 227 vehicles in total, including the 450 EQS 580 and EQS 2022 variants, as well as a few trim levels such as the 2021 580 and S2022 500. Mercedes-Benz has already addressed the issue by updating the computer server, which fixed the issue without requiring owners to take their cars to the dealer. Apparently, no one was killed or injured due to this rather minor defect.

Decision as of early 2022

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by letter starting at the end of January, though it looks like they won't have to do anything about it as the manufacturer has already reached out to it.
