Mercedes-Benz GLA 200: Mercedes' cheapest SUV arrives in the US

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 is the brand's SUV that is not currently on sale in the United States, although this may change. The patent application suggests that Mercedes will start offering the SUV as a 2023 model and it will be more affordable than the GLA 250.

Mercedes-Benz offers many coveted models in its range of luxury SUVs. This includes the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and G-Class. While many want these luxury SUVs, few can afford them. However, if you're looking for a more affordable Mercedes-Benz SUV, you'll be happy to hear the good news. The Mercedes-Benz GLA 200, Mercedes' cheapest SUV, is coming to the US.

Automakers are adjusting their model offerings to suit different international markets. Some vehicle models sold in the US are not available in other countries and vice versa. Compared to other automakers, Mercedes-Benz has a fairly standardized lineup around the world. However, there is still one inexpensive SUV that has not been sold in the United States: the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200. However, this is about to change. 

CarBuzz recently discovered a trademark application for the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The trademark application states that Mercedes' cheapest SUV will go to the US. 

Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 and GLA 200: what are the differences?

Currently, the cheapest Mercedes-Benz SUV model available in the United States is the , which starts at $36,400. In international markets, the GLA 200 is slightly cheaper than the GLA.

Using the same platform as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and A-Class, the GLA 200 is powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 161 hp. and 184 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the GLA 250 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 221 hp. and 258 lb-ft of torque. Also, while the GLA 250 offers both AWD and FWD models, the GLA 200 is only available with FWD.

2023 GLA 200: US release date

Mercedes-Benz filed a patent for the GLA 200 luxury SUV with the USPTO on December 16, 2021. The USPTO has since moved the patent application to a new filing department with a note that an attorney will review the application in about six months. 

Since Mercedes-Benz has already listed its 2022 lineup without any mention of the GLA 200, the six-month patent approval deadline suggests that the GLA 200 will be released for the 2023 model. says "intention to use", which means the GLA 200 will be sold shortly after the patent is approved.

With all of these factors, the launch date for the 200 Mercedes-Benz GLA 2022 in the US is likely to be towards the end of 2022. stated, "We will continue to offer the GLA 200 in the US market." 

No Mercedes-Benz is cheap. However, the 2023 GLA 200, Mercedes' cheapest SUV, is coming to America soon. Ordinary car buyers in the United States have the best chance of buying a Mercedes-Benz SUV.
