A startling lawsuit has just been filed that supposedly affects nearly every car that comes with a sunroof. The class-action lawsuit alleges that the glass in Mercedes' panoramic sunroofs is defective because it explodes unexpectedly without any impact from external forces or objects.

Plaintiff rented a new 300 Mercedes E2018 from a Mercedes dealer in California. In 2020, while driving on the highway, he heard a loud explosion. When he stopped and got out, he saw that his sunroof had broken. She made the blinds work so that no glass could get in.

The woman took her car to the dealership to have the sunroof replaced, but the service manager told her that the glass would not close because something must have hit the glass and she had to cover the cost of replacing it. When he picked it up after the job was completed, a Mercedes technician told him that there had been a similar incident at the dealership with a different owner a couple of months earlier.

The technician told him that Mercedes would never take responsibility for fear of damaging its reputation. The woman called the Mercedes office to explain what had happened, but they refused to pay her for the repairs.

The lawsuit alleges that Mercedes has known since at least 2013 that the sunroof glass breaks randomly without any impact. stands firmly on hatches that are broken due to the impact of stones or other objects on the glass. The lawsuit counters that the objects will not hit the hatch with enough force to break it. In addition, reports from drivers clearly contradict Mercedes' position.

Drivers reported that shards of glass cut them and damaged paint and internal components. Some of them got into accidents due to the fact that they were distracted by the explosion of the sunroof.

But the problem is getting worse. Even after Mercedes replaces the panoramic sunroofs, they explode again. In these cases, the owners hope that Mercedes will not charge for this second repair. But the Mercedes warranty says "GLASS DAMAGE: Glass breakage or scratches are not covered unless positive physical evidence of a manufacturing defect can be established."

The class action lawsuit was filed this week in the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.
