Mercedes-AMG SL. We open the roof in 15 seconds
The sporty positioning of the new SL prompted designers to use a power convertible top instead of the metal vario boot known from its predecessor. The 21 kg weight reduction of the roof and the resulting lower center of gravity have a positive effect on driving dynamics.
Taking into account these assumptions, a three-layer roof was used: with a stretched outer shell, a precisely made soffit and an acoustic mat placed between them. The latter is made of high quality material weighing 450 g/m.2provides an excellent level of acoustic comfort.
The compact and lightweight Z-fold concept eliminates the usual roof storage cover. Its function is performed by the front part of the skin. The gaps on the left and right sides are filled with automatically controlled shutters. The entire folding or unfolding process takes only about 15 seconds and can also be carried out while driving, at speeds up to 60 km/h. The roof is controlled using switches on the center console or via a touch screen, on which the folding or unfolding process is visualized using animation.
The roof is stretched over a steel and aluminum frame, which, thanks to its lightweight construction, also contributes to the car's low center of gravity. Two built-in rounded aluminum bars serve as an additional reinforcement here. The outer skin is available in three colors: black, gray or red. To ensure good visibility to the rear, the safety glass rear window has a heating function.

Another new addition is the soft-top storage, which is much lighter and more compact than the hard-top storage, allowing for more storage space. Two golf bags, for example, are perfect for the new SL's 213-litre boot. The automatic luggage compartment divider, included in the optional luggage compartment management package, is particularly practical. When the roof is closed, the bulkhead opens, increasing the boot volume to around 240 litres.
Thanks to the HANDS-FREE ACCESS function, the tailgate can be opened and closed fully automatically with a foot movement under the bumper. Transportation value is further enhanced by the optional luggage compartment package, which includes a movable luggage compartment floor, practical nets for attaching to the luggage compartment, legroom for rear and passenger passengers, a foldable shopping basket and a 12V socket.
Two petrol versions will be available for sale: SL 55 4Matic+ with 4.0 V8 engine producing 476 hp. and SL 63 4Matic + (4.0 V8; 585 hp).
