Metal sleds - are they better than wooden ones?

Do you always associate sledding with a carefree childhood? During the winter season and during the winter holidays, there were few activities for children, such as sledding from a nearby hill. Nowadays, the choice of sleds is much more extensive than even a few years ago. You can buy, for example, metal sleds or wooden sleds. Which one would be the best choice? We check!

What to look for when choosing a sled?

We will mention the difference between metal sleds and wooden sleds in more detail. However, it is worth starting with general considerations related to the selection of suitable equipment of this type. First of all, when choosing a sled for your kids, pay special attention to their safety - this is a paramount issue here. Therefore, be sure to choose the highest quality sled that will ensure this safety.

Be sure to put a children's sled that has the appropriate certificates confirming compliance with European standards, such as CE. They prove, among other things, that the materials used in their production are safe for children. However, it is worth bearing in mind that such markings are not always mentioned in the product description, which does not necessarily mean that this one automatically becomes less safe than the others.

In this case, you can simply look at their design and check if the manufacturer has indicated the exact name of the material from which the sled is made. Taking wooden models as an example, beech and oak wood is very durable.

Of course, you also need to make sure that there are no elements in the photo that could pose a potential threat to the baby - strongly protruding (for example, screws), sharp, and so on. Again, using a wooden sled as an example, it would be nice to have metal protection on the skids (then the material would not wear off so much on a less snowy section of the road) and be covered with a high-quality varnish.

Wooden sled - an immortal tradition

No matter how old you are, you probably remember wooden sleds for children from childhood. They are also popular nowadays. Although they compete a little for popularity laurels with other models, the clash is very even. Why are wooden sleds for children still so often chosen?

First, they are relatively light. As a result, the comfort of using them also increases, especially when you have very young children. These types of sleds for a child, although they cannot develop excessively high speeds, are stable and safe. They are suitable primarily for playing on small slides or slopes.

Wooden sleds very often have a number of elements that allow you to better care for your child. When looking for a sled for your child, choose one that has a special rope that you can use to pull him through the snow. Parents of the little ones will certainly be satisfied with the wooden sled with a back - thanks to them, even 2-3-year-old kids can get great pleasure from sledding.

Modern models can also have the metal protection at the bottom of the skids mentioned above, thanks to which it is easier and safer to pull the baby along a section of the road where there is no snow. An example of a product with such a metal accessory is the Polish lacquered sledge Springos.

Or maybe metal sleds?

When it comes to children's sleds, you can't help but notice that more and more manufacturers are choosing to sell metal sleds. Of course, the use of this material has many advantages. Wooden sleds are safe and stable, but metal ones are much more durable. They are not afraid to slide even on barely frozen asphalt or a very thin layer of snow.

Metal sleds are a good solution, especially for slightly older children. This is because they are a little more difficult to control. However, they more than make up for this with the fact that they can develop truly mind-blowing speeds, making it a pleasure to descend even on higher hills. However, they are less suitable to be pulled by parents, especially on level ground, as they can collapse very easily in the snow.

Wooden or metal sled - what to choose?

As you can see, it all depends on the age and needs of the child. Wooden sleds are quite versatile, but older children can get a little bored with them. Metal sleds are the best choice when your kids are grown up and ready for some real winter fun. The great joy of using them cannot be overestimated, as is their durability and resistance to even the most difficult weather conditions.
