Microsoft follows Apple's lead

For decades, Microsoft has produced the software that runs most of the world's personal computers, leaving hardware manufacturing to other companies. Apple, Microsoft's competitor, made it all. In the end, Microsoft admitted that Apple might be right...

Microsoft, like Apple, intends to release its tablet and will try to sell hardware and software together. Microsoft's move is a challenge to Apple, which has proven that the most effective way to create an easy-to-use gadget for consumers is to create an entire package.

Microsoft has unveiled its own Surface tablet, which should compete with the Apple iPad - Google Android, as well as its own partners producing computer equipment. This is the first computer of its own design in Microsoft's 37-year career. At first glance, it looks very similar to the iPad, but is it outwardly so? it contains many innovative ideas and is also aimed at a wider group of customers. The Microsoft Surface is a 10,6-inch tablet that runs Windows 8. Various versions are expected to be available, but each will feature a touch screen. One model will be equipped with an ARM processor (like the iPad) and will look more like a traditional tablet running Windows RT. The second will be equipped with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor and will run Windows 8.

The Windows RT version will be 9,3mm thick and weigh 0,68kg. It will include a built-in kickstand. This version will be sold with a 32GB or 64GB drive.

The Intel-based Surface will be based on Windows 8 Pro. Its likely dimensions are 13,5 mm thick and weigh 0,86 kg. In addition, it will offer USB 3.0 support. This particular version will also feature a magnesium chassis and built-in kickstand, but will be available with larger 64GB or 128GB drives. The Intel version will include additional support for digital ink via a pen attached magnetically to the body of the tablet.

In addition to the tablet itself, Microsoft will be selling two types of cases that stick to the Surface's magnetic surface. Unlike the Apple case, which only serves as a screen protector and stand, the Microsoft Touch Cover and Type Cover are designed to function as a full-sized keyboard with an integrated trackpad.

The stunning success of Apple, currently the world's most valuable company, has shaken Microsoft's hegemony as a computer mogul. Microsoft has not disclosed pricing or availability information for its tablet, saying the ARM and Intel versions will be priced competitively with similar products.

For Microsoft, making its own tablet is a risky venture. Despite competition from the iPad, Windows is by far the most profitable technology venture. This is largely based on contracts with equipment manufacturers. Partners may not like the fact that the giant wants to compete with them in the equipment sales market. So far, Microsoft has done differently in this area. It makes the very popular Xbox 360, but that console's success was preceded by years of losses and problems. Kinect is also a success. However, he fell with his Zune music player, which was supposed to compete with the iPod.

But the risk for Microsoft also lies in staying on the beaten path with hardware companies. After all, the iPad had already captured customers who were buying inexpensive laptops.
