The fourth-generation mini hatch, or Cooper, was revealed early thanks to some spy images released over the weekend showing the new city car inside and out, the latter marked by a bold redesign of the classic rear end.

Posted by Fork Block On Instagram and other social media accounts, images show a pre-production Cooper S without camo parked in a Chinese proving ground in all its glory, with the front looking very similar to the latest third generation facelift model.

However, the overall design of the front end has been simplified, including the removal of the side air intakes, but this may be due to the fact that this is likely an example of an all-electric Cooper SE.

Trainspotters will notice that the hood is no longer a clamshell, a massive departure from the series.

However, even more important news is the divisive new rear design that replaces the traditional rectangular taillights with wedge-shaped pieces bearing their own version of the Union Jack signature.

The fresh taillights are also now connected by a chrome bar (blackened in this case) that was previously in the middle but has been stretched to move from side to side.

Inside, the hatch has been redesigned again, with the round central display now larger and "floating", and the instrument cluster has been removed, leaving only a retractable head-up display in front of the driver.

It's important to note that the center stack still has a number of physical switchgears, including an old-school ignition switch.

The new Cooper will be officially introduced in the 2023 model year, so stay tuned. However, turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines are expected to be available again, along with an all-electric powertrain that Mini's parent company BMW is co-developing with Great Wall.
