Mini Cooper S Clubman

Remember the first Clubman? The original from the seventies is complicated, because even among the then miniatures, the Clubman Estate was a real rarity. What about the Clubmana from the recent history of the Mini brand? It was really special. It was no more puffy than a regular Cooper, with just a wagon backpack in the back and only one tailgate on the side.

He also summarized the fact that, according to the original Clubman, the trunk can be accessed through a double door. The new Clubman still maintains some of these traditions, but is nevertheless fully tailored to customer requirements. In Mini, they found that among their clients, in addition to the classic individualists, there are also people who would even like to drive their family in such a car. But why only one toddler has a door in the back and the other doesn't? Forget about tradition, add another door, perhaps this was heard in the demands of the leaders in the Mini. The new Clubman has also grown significantly: with 4.250 millimeters, it sits next to the Volkswagen Golf, and with an additional 30 millimeters wide, we get a much larger interior volume, which we lacked in the previous version.

Only the driver's working environment has changed a lot compared to its predecessor, but not much when comparing the Clubman to all other current models. The once large speedometer in the center console is now home to the multimedia system, which is surrounded by LED strips that illustrate the various vehicle operating parameters through light signals, whether it is displaying engine rpm, selection of driving profiles, radio volume or simple ambient lighting. The speedometer has now been moved to the classic dial in front of the driver, and for an additional fee, the Mini can also display all data on a head-up screen.

This is only conditionally welcomed, since it was done by placing an additional console with raised glass above the classic counters on which data is displayed, and this glass is rather dark and blocks our view of the road. The car, which we classify as a premium class for toddlers, clearly comes with a premium set of equipment. Active and passive safety is taken care of by almost every system the Bavarians have on their shelves, and the workmanship and nobility of materials indicate that the Mini is a premium product. We only found slightly more problems with the radar cruise control, as it was rather indecisive. When entering the fast lane, he found that the cars were leaving too late, so he first braked, and only then accelerated, and also braked rather unevenly during normal traffic after a slower one.

From the user's point of view, Mini has made a lot of progress, but the contribution in this area is still too small to be ranked among the best. There is enough space on the back of the bench, it sits well, there is also enough space above the headboard, the ISOFIX fasteners are easily accessible, there is plenty of space for storing small items. The design of the tailgate is less thoughtful, as it is so thick that it roughly intrudes into the interior of the already not very large 360-liter trunk. Even with a double tailgate, the dirt won't slip off your hands. While it's enough to slide your foot under the bumper to open the door, you have to hold on to a dirty hook when closing. It should be noted that this type of door opening is also not the safest, since the door opens sideways rather quickly, and if a child happens to be nearby, he can get very sick. Of course, such a door design also doesn't help when inspecting the car in reverse, which along with small windows, large headrests and a quickly dirty camera is just a touch with the help of the parking sensors.

Does the Clubman still drive like a real Mini? Here the Mini also entered the gray area. The compromises have taken their toll and the promised go-kart feel should not be taken too seriously. The Cooper S version of course delivers excellent performance, even when we select sporty settings via the driving profile we get more responsiveness and a slightly better soundstage. However, a relaxed driving style suits him better, and we only use this power reserve when we need to accelerate well in the overtaking lane. This is why the longer wheelbase and adjustable rear suspension provide more fun with a smoother driving experience, as the Clubman offers us much more comfort than the classic Mini.

Then do you even need to watch the Cooper S version? A diesel engine from the Cooper D version would be more suitable for it, but the Cooper S is designed for those for whom the family is no reason to limit the fun of chasing the Mini. With the Mini, they expanded the user base with the new Clubman, but on the other hand, they betrayed tradition and the original mission a bit. New buyers won't be offended by them anyway, as the Clubman will convince them of exactly the trade-offs mentioned, and old buyers will already find that authenticity among other house models that stay true to Mini's core mentality.
