Mitsubishi Galant VII - budget, but reasonable?

Buying a cheap, large and running car is not so easy. One way or another, even then Volkswagen by some strange coincidence often comes to mind. But in the world there are many other more beautiful countries than Germany, such as Japan. What is Mitsubishi Galant VII?

Used cars from 10 years ago are often discussed on the Internet, but there is also a demand for older cars for little money - even for students. Mitsubishi Galant VII is a very exotic offer compared to German competitors of the same years. Apparently, the distance from Japan to Poland was too great, and the Galant is actually one of the most popular and long-running Mitsubishi. Its history began in 1969, and the 1993rd generation was released in 1997. A new model replaced it this year.

Today, everyone knows the Galant as a mid-range limousine, but that wasn't the case from the start. The model did a trick similar to what the Skoda Octavia III did recently - it grew and changed the segment. Initially associated with the 4-door compact, it ended up gaining a lot of space and starting to struggle with larger cars. Moreover, in many markets, because it was sold even in the USA, Russia and Ukraine. However, after so many years, is there anything else to offer Mitsubishi Galant VII?

EVERYTHING COULD BE

The car is already old, so you can expect everything from it. However, for its age, it is surprisingly durable. What can be feared during the operation?

First, the worn suspension, which is nothing extraordinary. The system is multi-link, so it’s hard to shoot Galant, in which “nothing knocks, nothing knocks”. Most often, wishbones, shock absorbers, bushings and tie rods are suitable for replacement. Often problems arise with wheel bearings - they are changed out of spite along with the hub, and the costs, unfortunately, are not small.

Breakdowns happen with the gearbox, which simply capitulates from wear. A much bigger problem is brittle paintwork and corrosion, even affecting the wheel arches. The rest of the malfunctions are mainly related to the age of the car and often high mileage. The cylinder head gasket cracks, gasoline engines overheat, various equipment of the power unit, clutch and central locking fail. Nevertheless, the longevity of the Mitsubishi Galant deserves applause. However, is it really worth buying it instead of German competitors?

INTERIOR WITHOUT SURPRISES

Not surprisingly, the interior of the Mitsubishi Galant is simply insipid. This is the flagship example of a previous generation of Japanese designers who competed with the Germans with their asexual designs. The materials are lame, hard and gloomy. It all looks dull, but there are no special complaints about ergonomics. Almost everything is where it should be. Operation is also trivial - especially compared to modern cars, the manuals for which are increasingly Bible-thin. One way or another, despite the breeze of a bygone era, Mitsubishi Galant can be interesting.

Its biggest advantage is its size and low price. There is quite a lot of space in the car, both front and rear, at least for a car of those years. Thanks to this, it is suitable not only as a family four-wheeler, but also as the first student car for lovers of large dimensions. After all, not every student likes a tuned Honda Civic. There's also something else - the Galant often has some pretty good features, including power windows and mirrors, air conditioning, and a few other extras.

ON THE ROUTE IN TIME

The car may not be a corner master, but the multi-link suspension provides good handling, making the Galant predictable on the road. The chassis, however, puts an emphasis on ride comfort. This is good because it is what is generally expected from a limousine. It is better to look for a mechanical box - a muddy box is terrible. What about the engines?

Diesel 2.0 l, 90 hp and has poor performance. The only thing that is tempting is the low fuel consumption. We can talk about any dynamics only in the case of gasoline engines, and the weakest engine is 1.8 116 hp. copes with the car surprisingly. You don't feel any power reserve, but you can get some power from the car as you rev up. There's also a 126bhp option, but the 2-litre version is your best bet. The power of 137 km already provides quite a pleasant journey, but high speeds in dynamic maneuvers are also difficult to avoid. Interestingly, there are also V6 engines. The flagship has 2.5, serves for 170 km and surprises with its readiness for work, but you still have to redeem everything at a gas station.

Mitsubishi Galant has excellent value for money. Due to its age, it will not provide uninterrupted operation, but its durability is still admirable. An alternative to competitors from Germany? Why not!
