Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback 1.8 MIVEC Intensive

Today we must look for a baby with that name somewhere else. In the lower class. Hidden underneath its sheet metal is a completely different foundation (in the early years they shared it with the now deceased Smart Fourfor), and above all, the Colt has no racing ambition. And so the hole in the Lancer yawned all the time. They took care of the calm family fathers, including the non-living ones, while everyone else had to satisfy their desires somewhere else, in other brands.

Especially here in Europe, limousines do not find the right customers in this segment. Most people prefer to buy limousines. Partly because of the looks, but mainly because of the more convenient luggage compartment. And the Lancer Sportback hides just that. The fact that he wants to be more athletic than the limousine is already indicated by his name and shape.

The rear is undoubtedly more dynamic than the sedan. Much credit goes to the huge roof spoiler on the tailgate, which is already available in the base (Inform) equipment package. What kills the dynamics the most is the shape of the taillights and the slightly too calm bumper, which makes it seem like the front (which is closer to the Evo than the sedan) and the rear are not fully compatible. But hey, these are comments from editorial colleagues, the reaction was different along the way.

Inside, the differences are much less. The instrument panel remained exactly the same as in the sedan. The lines are clean, for customers accustomed to European cars, maybe even too clean, the controls are logical, the automatic air conditioning is analog, the gauges are nice and clear, the information screen between them too - they deserve control buttons, its place is next to the left air vent , and it's just a one-way walk through the data - on the other hand, a multi-function steering wheel with commands to control the audio system (which is updated with the Intense package with the Rockford Fosgate audio system), cruise control, and voice buttons.

Most drivers will find a suitable seat behind the wheel in the Lancer, and for the truly perfect, they will also miss the rim depth adjustment. The seats are precisely adjustable, comfortable and grippy enough to merit a seat in Mitsubishi's Sportback.

The engineers also thought about the rear passengers; There really should not be a place there, sooner or later, due to the modest equipment, they will start to get bored behind the wheel. If it is longer or even a few days, then there will be a place for luggage in the back. It's not an all-time high; Interestingly, in the sales catalogs you will not find any useful information about its size, but it is similar to the size of a sedan (344 l), but with a huge loading opening, it can be easily increased (60:40). ) and in all cases has a completely flat bottom.

The engineers managed to develop a two-tier design, so there is another space at the bottom, equipped with compartments for storing small items, and the disadvantages of the rear are that it is quite shallow, and the space on the left side is occupied by a large subwoofer Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Yes, even Japanese manufacturers have already discovered that while driving a car, one of the few things that can keep you entertained is music. And if the audio system is of good quality, the pleasure is much greater. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi forgot about a very important thing - soundproofing. The 1-litre engine, which is currently at the top of the Sportback petrol engine range and is the middle choice when it comes to diesels (8 DI-D), is incredibly quiet at idle.

When he completely calms down, he even seemed to stop working. Therefore, as the speed increases, it gets louder and louder, which can also be heard in the passenger compartment. And since the unit is a typical "sixteen-valve" that only comes to life in the upper operating range, and is also connected to a five-speed manual transmission, it will spend most of its working time - over 4.000 rpm - assuming the Sportbacks will used by more active drivers per minute. However, there you can simply turn off the audio system and rather indulge in the sound of the engine. Although this one is far from similar to any Bach symphony, which we would like to listen to endlessly.

For good sporting pleasure, you are also deprived of a technically perfect gearbox with precise and short enough movements, which, however, cannot challenge the desired liveliness due to too long gear ratios. Especially when overtaking and accelerating from long open corners. The downside of a five-speed gearbox, however, is that it ends up driving quite a lot of fuel consumption. It was not possible to drop below ten liters per 100 kilometers (the minimum average is 10, 2), on average about 11, and with a sharper ride it easily jumped to 12 and a half liters.

But since we're talking about a Mitsubishi Lancer called Sportback and fuel prices are steadily dropping, this shouldn't be a cause for concern.

evaluation

  • If you look at the Sportback, you will agree that it is a trendy and cute car. Aggressive nose, good genes, limousine design, plus a large roof spoiler at the rear and 18-inch wheels that come standard on the Intense. On the positive side, a spacious passenger compartment and rich equipment should also be added. However, the combination of engine and transmission seems to be less successful, which causes too much noise in the cabin and gives too little liveliness to more dynamic drivers.
