Mitsubishi Triton: A pickup truck that could come to the US to cause trouble for Tacoma and Ranger

Mitsubishi said in 2019 that we won't see the Triton L200 in the US, but that appears to be changing. Recent reports say we'll get the Triton L200 ready to race against big contenders like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and even the Jeep Gladiator.

It looks like Mitsubishi is about to do something amazing with the new pickup approaching and new reports that the Triton is coming to the US. That means we'll probably get another midsize truck to compete with the best midsize trucks, including the GMC and Chevy twins the Canyon and Colorado, as well as the upcoming Ram Dakota.

That sounds like a lot for one segment, but today trucks make up one in six vehicles sold in the US. Buyers often ask for something slightly smaller than a full-size pickup truck.

Popular in the UK, but not very effective in the US.

The Triton L200 is a powerful truck that is popular all over the world and is considered one of the best medium trucks in Europe. It has also been a bestseller in the UK for years, with the company saying that one in three trucks sold there is a Mitsubishi.

It includes an all-wheel drive system that can instantly switch from two-wheel drive for tarmac and fuel economy to a differential lock for mud and sand. You can also tow. Mitsubishi's midsize van has a towing capacity of 3500 kg in the UK, which is over 7700 pounds.

Double cab arrangement possible

Like other trucks in this segment, it comes with two or four doors. A two-door car in Europe is called a Club Cab, a four-door is called a Double Cab. In a double cab configuration, it can be purchased with a variety of options and gets some interesting names including Warrior, Trojan, Barbarian and Barbarian X.

An engine that is not very competitive for the US market.

However, its current engine does not seem ideal for the US market. The L200 is powered by a 2.3-liter turbodiesel with just 148 horsepower but 317 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps the company could turn on the 6-horsepower 2.5-liter V181 Outlander, or whatever engine the new Ralliart race truck has.

Some American test vans have already been seen

Fast Lane Truck viewers have been treated to some intriguing spy shots of the new L200 being tested in America.

Mitsubishi is said to be testing the L200 in the US for several months. Mitsubishi is constantly updating the truck, now it is the sixth generation. However, the last major redesign was in 2014 with an update in 2018.

Considering the truck will be updated in 2023, it makes sense that Mitsubishi could add everything needed to certify the truck for sale in the US. The current version is selling almost as well as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux in Australia.

The British Triton L200, depending on the model, is 17 feet long, about 6 inches shorter than the Tacoma, Frontier and Ranger. It's also about an inch or two narrower. But these dimensions may change due to US crash standards.
