Multifunction Compact - Suzuki SX4 (2006-)

Suzuki SX4 is a non-standard car. For some, this is just a small compact van, for others it is a crossover or a cross between a station wagon and a minivan. Prices for used cars are not low, which is offset by the numerous advantages of the SX4 model.

The slender appearance of the Suzuki SX4 is the result of the work of Italdesign Giugiaro specialists. The five-door version of the presented model debuted in 2006. Production of the car was entrusted to the Suzuki plant in Esztergom, Hungary, which also produced the twin Fiat Sedici. In 2007, the SX4 sedan was added to the lineup. In 2009, Suzuki decided on a facelift. The updated SX4 can be recognized by a new front bumper and an improved interior.

Those interested in the SX4 can choose between a front-wheel drive version or an all-wheel drive version with an electromagnetic center clutch. In the latter case, the distribution of torque is controlled electronically. Depending on the settings, the i-AWD system can direct traction to the front wheels only (2WD), engage the rear axle when it detects front wheel spin (Auto) or, for speeds up to 60 km/h, offer a constant power distribution in relation to 50: 50 (lock).

The manufacturer decided to designate the all-wheel drive version. Its clearance is increased by three centimeters, and the body is covered with unpainted plastic lining. Of course, add-ons should not be seen as an incentive for excursions. Even in the 4x4 version, the SX4 feels best on asphalt. At best, it will face forest or field paths. Attached drive and 19cm ground clearance make it easy to ride even on muddy or snowy roads - where other cars helplessly squeak their wheels, Suzuki makes its way without any problems. The car also works great in the city, where the increased ground clearance allows you to get to the curbs or park on them without the risk of damaging the bumper.

The suspension (McPherson struts and torsion beam) has optimal characteristics - it provides proper handling, and also effectively absorbs bumps. The significant tire profile (205/60 R16) contributes to driving comfort, effectively absorbing many road imperfections. Despite its height of 1,56 meters, the SX4 does not roll much when cornering quickly. Steering precision also contributes to a dynamic driving experience.

The presence of rear-wheel drive components negatively affected the capacity of the trunk - the hatchback has a modest 270 liters behind the high threshold of the trunk, which increases to 1045 liters with the rear seats folded down, and the sedan has 515 liters.

Despite the "box" body, the SX4 does not impress with the spaciousness of the cabin. The car is 4,1 meters long and has a cabin size comparable to B-segment cars. First of all, it lacks legroom, as well as a better profile and longer seat cushions.

Massive and sloping roof pillars reduce visibility. The SX4's cabin does not captivate with its design, which is compensated by ergonomics and transparency. You can also complain about the rigidity of the finishing materials and the sound insulation of the cabin - fast driving or the use of high speeds is associated with a lot of noise in the cabin.

Suzuki SX4 fuel consumption reports - check how much you spend at gas stations

An argument in favor of Suzuki is a decent package. Manual air conditioning, power mirrors and windshields, and an audio system with steering wheel controls are standard. Many models also include heated seats, six airbags, electronic keys and automatic air conditioning.

Suzuki offered the SX4 model with 1.5 (99 and 112 hp), 1.6 (107 and 120 hp) and 2.0 (143 hp) petrol engines and 1.6 (90 hp), 1.9 ( 120 hp) and 2.0 (135 hp), while in the weakest versions you can only rely on front-wheel drive. The base gasoline engine already provides satisfactory dynamics. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds and has a top speed of over 170 km/h. The stairs start when we want a four-wheel drive car. Then it turns out that the 1.6 version is sluggish and not very agile - the engine, struggling with the resistance of a more complex transmission, takes almost a second more to accelerate the SX4 to “hundreds” than in the 2WD version.

Therefore, the best choice are turbodiesel engines, which boil with huge torque from the lowest revs. Gasoline engines thrive best at high revs, which, together with the elevated body and all-wheel drive, means a lot of fuel consumption, especially when trying to go faster. Suzuki combined powertrains with manual transmissions (5- and 6-speed) or a 4-speed "automatic". The first of them do not impress with their accuracy and ease of control, and the automatic transmission is an offer for the patient.

Suzuki vehicles are renowned for their reliability. Durability also proved to be an asset to the SX4. In the latest TUV reports, the car is in first place. The 7th and 9th positions mean the SX4 sits next to durability icons like the Porsche 911, Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla.

Suzuki SX4 problems mostly come down to interior flaws - creaky chairs and their loose clasps, drop-down boxes under the passenger seat, seals that allow water to pass through, as well as crackling and crackling plastic. Drivers also complain about low durability of steering mechanisms, shock absorbers and brakes, which additionally tend to squeal. On some instances, gearboxes work with clear resistance. Rust appears most quickly on backdoorwhile the plastic body trim tends to flake off.

Suzuki SX4 users have no complaints about powertrain components and powertrains. You don’t even have to worry about turbodiesels - the Japanese concern used the proven designs of Fiat-GM (1.9 and 2.0) and Ford-PSA (1.6).

AutoX-ray - what the owners of the Suzuki SX4 complain about

The Suzuki SX4 doesn't impress with its spacious interior, performance, or off-road ability. Those interested in buying will also have to put up with significant fuel demand and high purchase costs. Suzuki makes up for any shortcomings with its versatility, high quality workmanship and durability. Four-wheel drive is the highlight of the program. Although it is attached, it greatly improves driving safety in difficult conditions.

Recommended engines

Gasoline 1.6: The 1,6-litre engine was the smallest to be matched with all-wheel drive. The motorized SX4 is neither fast nor economical. For a small car, approx. 8 l / 100km. However, the 1.6 engine turns out to be much less voracious than the 143-horsepower 2.0 version, which can consume more 10 l / 100km.

Diesel 1.9 DDiS: Fiat-GM's design fits perfectly under the SX4's hood. It provides good performance and high flexibility for which you pay approx. 7 l / 100km. The engine, which has proven itself in many Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Opel and Saab models, is durable - in normally operated and maintained cars, serious costs before exceeding 200 kilometers are not common.
