Retrofit: Motorcycle and scooter wiring permitted in France

Published in the Official Journal this Friday, April 3, the Modernization Ordinance provides the legal basis for converting thermal imaging cameras to electrical ones in France.

This is the culmination of the debate. The European-approved Modernization Decree was published in the Official Journal and marks the beginning of a new activity in France. An important key to permitting the conversion, this decree provides a regulatory framework for the electrical conversion of thermal vehicles (gasoline or diesel) to electric vehicles (battery or hydrogen).

While four-wheeled vehicles are expected to form the bulk of the business, two- and three-wheeled vehicles will also be affected. Some players even specialized in this area. This is the case with the young startup Noil, whom we interviewed a few months ago.

Strict rules

Although France is one of the last European countries to authorize refurbishments, activities are still highly regulated. For four-wheeled vehicles, only models over 5 years old can be retrofitted. For two- and three-wheeled vehicles, the term has been reduced to three years.

The use of professional skills will also be mandatory, and the latter can only offer previously approved kits. In France, UTAC is responsible for the procedure. Obviously a paid approach that can take months of waiting before the first installs are completed.
