Motorcycle Mechanics: Maintenance Basics

An oil change does not mean a major overhaul. Engine oil and a new filter are important, but don't forget the spark plugs, air filter, engine tune and chassis consumables. Here are the basics of DIY maintenance, as well as the checks you need to complete to know when professional intervention is needed.

Difficult level: Not easy

Equipment

• New spark plug (s).

• Engine oil and oil filter.

• Install new brake pads if necessary.

• If necessary, a new air filter (dirty paper).

• Solvent for cleaning the foam air filter.

• To synchronize multi-cylinder carburettors, Hein Gericke vacuum gauge manifold (115 €).

Not to do

Ignore infrequent maintenance, such as replacing the fork (otherwise a problem with road holding and bottoming out when braking), replacing the brake fluid (corrosion, sticking, costly repairs) or coolant (reduced frost protection, corrosion protection and lubrication) ... powers).

1- Take care of the chain

A well lubricated secondary drive chain lasts longer. As for its voltage, some mistakes are still very common. Some people forget to re-tighten it only when the transmission jerks become unbearable. Conversely, others tend to tighten their chains too much (you should leave 3 cm of free play). Too tight, the chain "eats" the horses and wears out faster. Finally, the classic mistake is to ignore the “beat”, which is almost inevitable when the chain begins to tire. Since the wear is unevenly distributed, the chain is under tension in some places and slack in others, which can be seen by turning the wheel. The narrowest point is used as a reference for adjustment, otherwise the chain may become too tight and loose.

2 - Drain and replace the oil filter

Checking the engine oil level is basic. Oil consumption depends on the type of engine cooling, engine mileage, use and ambient temperature. Check the level regularly to avoid engine damage due to temporary oil overruns (Photo 1 A). Draining the engine oil and replacing the oil filter are essential for the health of the engine, including engines that consume oil (Attached file is missing.
