Motorcycle technique: Lubricate the chain

Correct and regular lubrication of the drive chain will significantly extend its life. You can grease or lubricate it by hand, which is sometimes a chore due to the lack of a B-pillar, or opt for an automatic lubrication system. This is the Scottoiler that doubles the chain's lifespan and thus almost competes with the universal joint.

Difficult level: easily

Equipment

Lubricate the spray or grease in the tank or tube with a brush or oil burette filled with SAE 80 or 90 gear oil.

Scottoiler Mk7 Universal Kit priced at € 116,50. Travel kit with large oil tank and mount behind the license plate for 155,69 euros. The Scottoiler is sold by mail through Shaw Moto Products, 1 rue des Ruisseaux 86200 Nuel-sous-Faye, tel. 05 49 22 57 29, fax 05 49 22 67 53

1- Lubricate the chain

The chain has o-rings so the lubricant stays in each axle for life. However, on the outside of the chain, the rollers mesh with the teeth of the drive gear and driven wheel and should be lubricated regularly. Rollers without lubrication cause a lot of friction, so the chain and sprockets wear much faster, accompanied by a slight loss of power. Therefore, the chain must always be oil. Rain washes away grease from the chain, but at the same time lubricates it. Just oil it when the rain stops. The most practical lubrication is to spray the chain with a special aerosol lubricant (photo 1 a). Just as effectively in terms of lubrication, you can apply lubricant in a tube or jar with a brush (photo 2 b below). You can also lubricate with a burette (photo 2c below). Use SAE 80 or 90 gear oil.

2- Discover Scottoiler®

There is an automatic secondary chain lubrication, Scottoiler®... This is a Scottish creation imported to France by Shaw Motor Products. This principle of automatic lubrication has proven to be capable of doubling the service life of a chain set. From 20 km, it can increase to 000 km and even more. The basic Scottoiler kit costs 40 euros. Yours sincerely rode a Scottoiler in your old XJ 000 116,50 years ago and this is the same chain kit ever since.

3- understand the system

Oil from its small reservoir flows directly to the driven gear and to the chain only when the engine is running, thanks to a vacuum connection on the intake manifold. The flow rate is adjusted on the tank, which you just need to fill. Installing Scottoiler®simple, the instruction is quite clear and the kit is complete: adapters for suction pipes, hoses, mounting brackets, rubber bands, clamps, oiler (0,5 l). The scottuler fits any motorcycle. No more lubrication, especially on motorcycles without a center stand. The chain remains oily even after heavy rain (photo 3a below).

4- Install Scottoiler

It all depends on the architecture of your motorcycle for the placement of the tank; which can be in a vertical, angular or even horizontal position (powered by a siphon). It can be positioned behind the fairing, along the fork tube between two triple trees, or along the frame tube using the existing mountings. In our case, we put it close to the inlet pipes (photo 4b opposite) to connect the vacuum pipe that controls the oil drain. You can extend the hose to the end of the swingarm; all the necessary clamps are provided. You force it to protrude at the bottom and hang it by the tongue, which takes the axle of the rear wheel, as in our case. Orient it so that its end touches the crown near the chain (photo 4c below). Thus, the oil is distributed by centrifugal force and lubricates the chain well. Note that in cold weather the oil is thicker and therefore drains much more slowly, so it is important to regulate the oil flow. The tank is filled with the supplied cylinder (photo 4d below), and this reserve is enough for 800-1600 km, depending on the flow setting.

Not to do

– Ignore chain tension as it no longer needs to be lubricated with Scottoiler.
