Engine oil 10w-60

In this article, we will look at engine oil with a viscosity of 10w-60. Let's analyze what each letter and number means in the marking, scope, features, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. We will also compile a rating of 10w60 oils from different manufacturers.

 Types and scope of viscosity 10w-60

You should immediately take into account that engine oil with a viscosity of 10w-60 can have a synthetic and semi-synthetic base. But depending on the scope of use, it is generally accepted that 10w-60 is a synthetic motor oil. It is poured into engines with improved characteristics, turbine and forced engines operating at maximum speed, at high operating temperatures (up to +140°C). These are mainly sports cars that require high-quality synthetic bases and special additives with additives. The manufacturers of these vehicles recommend a viscosity of 10w60.

Important! Pay attention to the recommendations in the instructions for your car. Not all engines are suitable for this viscosity.

Even if the oil is suitable for your car, this does not mean that it meets all the requirements of the unit. First of all, you should pay attention to the manufacturer's tolerances, engine type and SAE classifier. In sports cars, as a rule, it is recommended to fill in high-quality synthetic oils, mineral oils are suitable for older cars, in other cases, semi-synthetics are mainly used.

It should be understood that viscosity is a variable value that varies depending on the ambient temperature and engine temperature. If the viscosity of the oil is thicker than recommended by the manufacturer, the engine will suffer from overheating and loss of power. With a more liquid one, even more seriously, when the engine is running, the oil film will be insufficient, which leads to wear of the cylinder-piston assembly.

Specifications 10w-60

The numbers and letters on the 10w-60 engine oil label indicate the permissible temperature range for using the fluid according to the SAE classification.

The number before the letter “W”, 10 is the viscosity index of the substance at low temperatures (winter), the oil will not change its flow rates (it will not drag on further) to -25 ° С. The number after the "W" indicates the viscosity index at operating temperature, according to the SAE J300 standard, the viscosity at 100 ° C for oils of this viscosity should be at the level of 21,9-26,1 mm2 / s, this is the most viscous engine oil in the classification. The same letter "W" stands for all-weather engine oil.

Automobile oils are classified according to two main features:

  • scope - API classification.
  • Oil viscosity - SAE classification.

API systematization divides oils into 3 categories:

  • S - gasoline units;
  • C - diesel units;
  • EC is a universal protective grease.

Engine oil 10w-60

Advantages of 10w-60:

  • The unique formula minimizes engine oil leakage by controlling seal element swelling.
  • Reduces the formation of soot and removes old soot from the engine cavity.
  • Creates a thick film on surfaces subject to friction, saving old engines.
  • Contains anti-wear components.
  • Increases a unit's resource.
  • Another advantage that not all products can boast of. The composition includes a special friction modifier, which allows you to minimize all unwanted friction resistance of parts. This allows you to increase the efficiency of the unit, increases power over the entire range of loads.
