Can an exhaust pipe be repaired?

Exhaust system repair is a relatively common type of mechanical repair. Standard mufflers last an average of three to five years, but you should perform regular maintenance to maximize the lifespan.

Depending on the severity of the problem, you may consider replacing the entire exhaust system. However, repairs can increase the life of the pipe, increase fuel consumption, and increase efficiency.

Performance Muffler experts are ready to answer your muffler repair questions. Read the following for more information on your exhaust pipes.

What is an exhaust system and how does it work?

Your exhaust system works to remove toxic gases from your engine away from the cab, and you can find it under the back of your car. It also dampens exhaust sound and improves engine performance and fuel consumption.

An exhaust is made up of several small parts that work together. Here are some of the parts of your exhaust:

  • Exhaust manifold
  • Catalytic converter
  • Muffler
  • Clamps
  • filters

These parts are just a few of the many parts that help guide exhaust fumes away from vehicle occupants. All of these parts are subject to accelerated wear and require repair or replacement over the life of the vehicle.

Signs of damaged exhaust pipes

As soon as you notice the following signs, return your vehicle to our team at Performance Muffler. Driving with a damaged exhaust is hazardous to the environment, your health and vehicle performance. For maximum efficiency, our mechanics regularly inspect your vehicle for problems.

Loud noises from the engine

Unusual sounds are often a sign of an exhaust leak. Always pay attention to your engine noise and feel free to reach out to our team if anything sounds out of place or strange.

Vibrations

Request an inspection if you feel vibration under your feet or from the gas pedal while driving. Any part of the exhaust system can fail, causing vibrations, smoke, and more. Waiting for a solution to a problem will cause additional problems.

Higher fuel consumption

Has your car been needing more gas than usual lately? You may have an exhaust leak. When your exhaust is in need of repair, your engine must work harder to maintain the same level of performance.

How to fix an exhaust system

It is best to take an exhaust system repair to a mechanic, but sometimes you can do it yourself. The following explains the steps you need to take to check, diagnose, and fix problems.

1: Inspect the car

As soon as you encounter a problem, you should check your vehicle's exhaust system. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Park the vehicle on a level, stable surface such as concrete.
  • Allow your exhaust system to cool - it is not safe to inspect or repair while the engine is hot.
  • Raise the vehicle. You need to fit under the car and comfortably inspect the exhaust pipes.
  • Check for leaks. If you don't know what to look for, check for rust, holes, scratches, and cracks.

If necessary, run the engine while the vehicle remains on the jack to look for leaks.

2: Decide how to solve the problem

You must determine the extent of the damage. If the system contains severe rust, you may need to replace the entire exhaust system. If you decide to repair it, consider the following options:

  • Use exhaust tape or epoxy to contain small leaks.
  • Replace damaged part

3: Clean the damaged area

Thoroughly clean the problem area and remove all rust, dirt and debris with a wire brush. After that, use sandpaper to remove the final marks, which will help the tape or epoxy adhere better to the surface.

Finally, wipe the area with acetone.

4. Seal the leak with tape or epoxy

To fix the area, read the tape instructions as different brands require different methods. Make sure you seal the pipe all the way around and cover at least a few inches on both sides of the damaged area.

This step ensures that the tape stays in place while you drive.

To apply epoxy, mix the components just prior to application and cover the leak with a thick layer of epoxy. Epoxy cures quickly, so don't wait.

Some choose to use both epoxy and tape to fix the problem.
