Can resin be drilled?

Drilling holes in resin is possible; you can do it in a few minutes. The resin must be completely cured. Uncured or semi-formed resin must not be drilled. In addition to being dirty, soft, or sticky, resin cannot support an open hole.

  • Cure the resin by exposing it to UV light.
  • Get the right size drill
  • Put a mark on your resin
  • Drill the hole in the resin
  • Remove Burr

We'll go into more detail below.

Can resin be drilled?

You may wonder if you can drill through epoxy after making resin pendants and epoxy drawings. The answer is obviously YES.

However, you will need some tools.

How to drill through resin

Important!

The resin must be completely cured. Uncured or semi-formed resin must not be drilled. In addition to being dirty, soft or sticky, resin cannot hold an open hole and you will also damage the drill.

Procedure

Step 1: Determine the drill size

When drilling holes for resin jewelry, use a size 55 to 65 drill bit. Jump rings and other resin jewelry in most sizes are suitable.

What if you don't know which drill size is best?

Get a drill diameter to wire diameter conversion chart to compare drill sizes with jewelry wire gauges. Match the drill to the one you are working with. If you are not sure about the drill size, choose a smaller one than you think. To enlarge the hole, you can always drill it with a larger bit.

Step 2: Mark the Resin

Mark the spot on the resin where you want to drill. I recommend using a fine tip marker.

Step 3: Drill the hole in the resin

Here is how you should proceed:

  • Apply resin to a waste wood board to protect the work surface.
  • Carefully drill a hole in the resin, holding the drill at the right angle. Rapid drilling creates friction which can cause the epoxy to soften or melt.
  • Drill hardened resin into a wooden board. If you make holes in the countertop, you can ruin that surface by drilling through it.
  • Fill in the hole. This is best done with a flexible wire or toothpick.

Step 4: Remove the Burr

After you drill through the resin, you may be left with resin crumbs that you cannot scrape off. If this happens, take a drill one or two sizes larger than the one used to drill the resin. Then place it over the drilled hole. Turn it by hand a few turns to remove burrs.

Step aerobics 5: Debriefing

To make your resin charm wearable, add a bouncing ring, cord, or shackle to it.

What else do you need to know about drill resin?

1. Cheap drills will do

If you are making metal jewelry, you may have spent a lot of money on drills). While they're great for drilling into metal, resin doesn't require anything that strong or durable. Since resin is soft, it can be drilled with almost any drill bit.

2. The resin acts as a lubricant for the drills.

Additional lubrication on the bit is not required. Remember to lubricate the drilling equipment as directed.

3. Separate drill bits should be used for resin drilling and metal drilling.

You don't want to risk the resin crumbs contaminating the metal that can be heated with a torch. You don't want to inhale those toxic fumes.

4. You could use a vise

You can use a vise if you want to hold the resin while you drill. However, pressing the vise against the resin will leave defects. Before clamping the resin in a vise, tie it with something soft.

It is not easy to understand how to drill resin. It is difficult to master the process of drilling small holes in resin. While moving the drill from one side to the other is easy, doing it straight and level is not. This is a great time to dig up old misshapen resin pieces and use them as practice pieces.

Pro Board. To keep your holes straight, use a drill press.

F.A.Q.

Should I wait until he is completely cured?

It feels sticky around the edge and on top; otherwise it is solid. I mixed for at least 2 minutes for each of the three pours.

It looks like your resin was not thoroughly mixed before pouring. It is necessary to mix and apply more resin to completely cover the sticky spots.

Will it work with fully cured resin?

Problem: I bought a keychain mold kit from an art store that includes a thing that looks like a small screwdriver, with a tiny part at the top so that you can turn it by hand without lifting the screwdriver.

Yes, keychain mold can work with resin.

Can a 2mm diameter hole be drilled in the center of a 3" or 4" diameter flat plastic disk (so that the disk can rotate around the string)?

Are there ways to patch up a hole that was unintentionally drilled in the wrong place without making it obvious?

Yes, try pouring more resin.

Summing up

Drilling holes in resin shouldn't be a problem if you get a few tools and protective gear before you get started. Remember that the resin must be cured; otherwise your work will be dull. I also reiterate the need to purchase an appropriately sized drill bit for the task.
