Lane changes are so common that drivers usually do it mechanically. Some forget that it requires special care. Make sure you're not the kind of driver who pays special attention to empty words.

KEEP YOUR EYES AROUND YOUR HEAD

Since changing lanes generally does not require slowing down, drivers should remember that this requires them to keep a close eye on what is happening on the road both in front and behind. Before we head to the next lane, let's see if we can do it safely. Be aware of the possibility of blind spots and the risk of not seeing an approaching car or motorcyclist from behind. Incorrect lane change is the third leading cause of an injured motorcyclist among motorcyclists*.

When changing lanes, monitoring blind spots is of particular importance and can save us from other drivers entering the road and, as a result, creating a dangerous situation on the road. Before driving, make sure that the mirrors in our car are properly adjusted. Side mirrors should be mounted so that you can see as much space as possible to the side of the car and behind it, and the rearview mirror should show us the rear window, says Adam Bernard, director of Renault's safe driving school.

THE SIGNAL OF INTENTION OF EARTH CHANGE AND THE LAW OF THE FIRST

The threat to driving safety lies in the fact that drivers do not signal their intention to change the route. Some drivers underestimate this need, especially when driving short distances, or do it at the last moment when it may be too late for other road users to react safely. The rules oblige drivers to signal in advance and directly, in particular, the intention to change lanes and stop signaling immediately after the maneuver. Therefore, the timely use of indicators should never be neglected, this will allow others to notice the signal of the intention to make a maneuver in time.

When entering a roundabout, we are not required to signal with a left sign, but if entering such a roundabout involves a lane change, or when there are at least two lanes at the intersection and we change lanes, then we should use the indicator. We also signal the exit from the roundabout.

It must be remembered that when changing the occupied lane, we are obliged to give way to a vehicle moving in the lane into which we intend to enter, as well as a vehicle entering this lane on the right.

COOL EVEN BE CAREFUL

A lane change can often be associated with an overtaking manoeuvre. In this situation, special care is also required to make sure that the existing conditions allow maneuvering without jeopardizing traffic safety. First of all, let's check if we have sufficient visibility and enough space, and if the vehicle in front has not previously given an intention to overtake, change lanes or change direction. Also, do not overtake if the driver behind us has started this maneuver. Remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicle being overtaken or other road users. When overtaking, you must not exceed the speed limit.
