What should I look for when choosing a hedge trimmer? Check!

A house with a garden is a great convenience, but also a lot of responsibilities. For a garden to look beautiful, it needs to be properly looked after. One of the tools without which it is difficult to maintain a neat appearance are brush cutters. What type would be the best? We give a hint in our article!

What shape can a hedge saw have?

Before you buy scissors, the first thing you need to pay attention to is their type. Manufacturers offer many solutions that are designed for different tasks. Let's check which hedge trimmer models are available on the market and how they differ.

Manual scissors - secateurs

It's a small adjustment tool. Hand shears are also suitable for cutting small shrubs. The advantage of the secateurs is also a low price, especially in relation to other, more advanced models. They are usually small in size, which provides a so-called clean cut without damaging the shoots, but can be a problem with large gardening jobs.

Cordless hedge trimmer

This type of scissors is equipped with a battery that allows you to automatically cut branches. Scissors do not require a constant connection to electricity, so they are very convenient to use. Unfortunately, their disadvantage is the length of the operating time. Scissors can usually work for a little over an hour, after which they need to be plugged in for recharging.

Electric hedge trimmer

This model, unlike the previous one, requires an electrical connection. This has its advantages and disadvantages. The cable limits the distance, but the scissors are constantly charging. They do not produce exhaust fumes and have a moderate noise level. They are suitable for trimming even very large hedges, as long as you have a long enough extension.

Petrol shears

These scissors are most commonly used for professional use, such as by municipal green services. They require an appropriate supply of fuel and, unfortunately, their great disadvantage is the formation of exhaust gases. The volume of work is high enough that few people choose this type of model. However, if you are planning on frequent and more complex gardening jobs, you will definitely need this type of equipment.

Hedge trimmer - which blades to choose?

With automatic scissors, you will have to make a decision about the blades. They can be unilateral or bilateral. The former have a longer cut, which significantly reduces the operating time. They are most often used to work with flat and wide hedges. Double-sided blades are ideal for non-standard and often more complex work. It is also worth noting that when used, they do not vibrate as much as single-sided ones. This is an extremely important aspect to consider, especially if you are planning to work long hours in the garden.

Hedge trimmer or short hedge trimmer?

When choosing scissors, you also need to consider the length of the blade and handle. Models with a bar will be most convenient for working near a high hedge. They are also suitable for trimming tree branches. On the other hand, short pruners are well suited for more detailed work. A comfortable grip is also very important. Many ignore this issue, and it can significantly increase or decrease the comfort of work. The best are movable handles that allow you to perform vertical and horizontal work.

How powerful should cordless scissors be?

When choosing automatic models, the issue of device power is extremely important. It should be chosen depending on the type of work you will be doing. If your hedge has large, thick branches, choose a high power device, such as 700 watts. Unfortunately, this value affects the price, and sometimes the weight of the equipment. So if you don't need high performance scissors, it's better to choose something less powerful.

Garden shears and torque

Torque is as important as the power of the device. It indicates the force generated by the motor of the device. The higher the torque, the harder the work can be done by the equipment. For example, 70 Nm (Newton meters) will allow you to easily get rid of thick hedge branches.

Safety when using garden shears

Safety considerations should not be underestimated when choosing a tool. In the case of manual garden shears, the only protection is most often a mechanism that allows the blades to be closed when not in use. Automatic models should have slightly more advanced mechanisms. Pay attention to whether the selected equipment has a brake and a rubber tip. It will protect the equipment from damage and fragments, for example, in contact with a stone. The blade cover is also important, which can be put on after work is completed.

Choosing the right garden shears can be a daunting task. We hope that after reading our article you already know what to look for when buying.
