How dangerous is condensation in the headlights and how to get rid of it

Quite often, car owners are faced with such a problem as fogging headlights, which raises many questions about the causes of this phenomenon.

How dangerous is condensation in the headlights and how to get rid of it

Why does condensation form?

The formation of condensation in the headlight is explained by the simplest laws of physics and is acceptable even in new cars. This phenomenon can occur under certain weather conditions (high humidity and low temperature).

The fact is that the ventilation of the headlight occurs through small holes that have rubber tubes at the top and bottom, and the moisture that gets inside through the ventilation holes settles on the coldest surface - the transparent part of the headlight.

A little fogging of the headlights is considered normal. In this case, the condensate will evaporate on its own when the weather changes or when you turn on the high or low beam.

What is harmful condensation inside the headlights

If there is so much condensate that it flows in drops, or water has already formed in the headlight, then this is not the norm.

The danger lies in the fact that, firstly, water drops refract light, so the illumination of the road deteriorates. As a result, traffic safety is reduced.

Secondly, high humidity is the cause of corrosion. As a result, the headlight can quickly become unusable.

Thirdly, water is a good conductor of electricity. Therefore, it can cause a short circuit, which can disable the entire electrical network of the car.

Fourthly, the presence of moisture can cause the bulbs to burn out quickly, which will lead to additional costs.

Cleaning the vents

One reason is clogged vents. In this case, they must be cleaned. To do this, you need to dismantle the headlight, disassemble it and find these holes. As a rule, they are located in the back. Next, they need to be carefully cleaned and the rubber plug installed correctly. Then you need to return everything to its original position.

If everything is done correctly, then the problem will disappear.

Restoration of tightness

Another reason is leakage. That is, a situation may arise when the sealant has become unusable at the joints.

In this case, you need to dismantle the lantern and remove the old sealant. To do this, you can use special chemical activators. Next, you need to carefully degrease the surface.

After that, the headlight must be assembled by treating the joints with a new sealant. During the treatment with sealant, you must act very carefully, preventing it from getting on the reflector, lamp and glass. After that, you need to wait a day for the sealant to completely harden, and install the headlight in place.

The causes of perspiration in the headlights can be either clogging of the ventilation holes, or a violation of the tightness of the lamp. It is important to eliminate the problem that has arisen so as not to get negative consequences.
