Power steering pump - how to recognize the symptoms of a breakdown? Pump Fault Signals and Sounds

Almost all modern cars are equipped with power steering. Without this system, the driver would have to strain at every turn of the steering wheel, especially when parking or at low speeds. This element, like any other device, can break or wear out. So, we suggest what to do in such a situation.

Symptoms of a broken power steering pump. When is a repair needed?

There may be several signs of damage to the power steering pump. First, you may notice that you have lost support suddenly, without any serious symptoms preceding this situation. This may mean that the power steering pump itself is working, but the belt that drives the wheel at the pump has broken. Then you immediately feel the lack of support for obvious reasons.

Sudden depressurization of a hydraulic system can have similar symptoms. This is due to the loss of support, but also the need to find the problem and fix it. Faults of this type will also often be accompanied by the phenomenon of stepwise increase in power depending on the turn of the steering wheel due to the large amount of air in the system.

It happens that the hydraulic system is tense, the V-belt is in good condition (and correctly tensioned), and the power steering pump does not cope with its tasks. This is manifested by a loud sound and indicates the destruction of the element. The power steering pump often needs to be replaced.

Which light on the dashboard indicates a power steering pump failure?

In more modern car models, problems with the power steering pump are indicated by the corresponding icon on the dashboard. Its symbol is most often the steering wheel, and some manufacturers put an exclamation mark next to it. Available in orange and red colors. Then this is a clear signal that the steering system is not working properly, and the code and location of the fault should be diagnosed.

Power steering pump regeneration - what is it?

In the event of a malfunction, the only good news is that the power steering pump can be regenerated. Thanks to this, you can save a lot of money and enjoy a functional device. In order for the damaged power steering pump to work better, a specialized service completely disassembles it and looks for a malfunction. Bearings, impeller with vanes or compression springs may be damaged.

After a defective part is found, the pump must receive new seals, bearings and bushings. At a later stage, it is checked for tightness and fluid leakage. If everything is in order, you can enjoy the functional element. The price of regeneration of the power steering pump is incomparably lower than the purchase of a new component.

What power steering oil to choose?

Whether repairing or replacing the power steering pump, you need to add fluid to the hydraulic system. This includes purchasing the appropriate substance and venting the system. You can choose from the following power steering oils:

  • mineral - they are distinguished by a mild effect on rubber elements and a low price;
  • semi-synthetic - have a lower viscosity, are more resistant to foaming and have better lubricating properties than mineral ones. They react more strongly with rubber elements;
  • synthetic ones are the most expensive of the whole bet, but they are by far the best power steering fluids. They have a low viscosity and are excellent for working in difficult conditions.

And what power steering fluid to choose for your car?

Refer to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and select a specific power steering fluid.

How to change the power steering fluid?

First of all, ask someone for help. First, unhook the return hose from the pump to the expansion tank and direct it to a bottle or other container. During this time, gradually add oil, and the assistant with the engine off should turn the steering wheel left and right. The oil level will drop, so keep topping it up. Repeat this procedure until the old fluid (you will recognize it by its color) is completely drained from the system. Then connect the return hose to the tank. Your assistant should turn the steering wheel left and right from time to time. If the level does not drop, you can start the engine. You will notice that the power steering pump will start to work and the fluid in the reservoir will be depleted. So top it up and let the other person gently turn the steering wheel in both directions. It is good to perform this procedure for a few more minutes, because then the support is weathered.

That's how you found out what a power steering pump really is. You already know what regeneration and replacement of the power steering pump includes. However, we hope that you will not have to use our advice in practice on how to deal with a damaged power steering pump!
