Navigation is not enough. Mobility and fast internet is what matters now

In modern vehicles, factory navigation is increasingly more than just a simple map showing directions to a selected location. These are complex systems that allow the driver to communicate with the world.

The development of electronics, miniaturization and new software have allowed automakers to provide customers with vehicles that are also mobile infotainment centers. These new features are hidden under the term infotainment system. At the same time, it is not only about entertainment, but above all about making driving easier and being able to work where mobility is now crucial. These are the expectations of the market - the car must be comfortable, safe, economical and computerized.

For example, Skoda offered a navigation device called Columbus in its Kodiaq SUV. It includes a radio tuner (also digital radio), an SD card slot, an Aux-In input and a USB connector for easy operation with external devices. Also included is a Bluetooth interface and SmartLink software (including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink).

As soon as the driver connects a compatible smartphone to the USB port, the corresponding control panel appears on the screen of the Columbus device. With mobile features, you can connect to online music from Google Play Music, iTunes or Aupeo. Important information for music lovers - Columbus has a 64 GB drive, which allows you to store a huge amount of music. There is also a DVD drive.

But the Columbus device isn't just for fun. For many drivers, its functionality matters. Through the WLAN hotspot, you can surf the Internet, upload and download data and e-mail from up to eight connected devices. You can also read and write SMS messages on the monitor. In addition, various functions are available for navigation, information and weather services.

The Care Connect system deserves attention. This is a novelty in the offer of the Czech brand. The capabilities of this system have been divided into two categories. The first is Infotainment Online, which provides additional information and links to satellite navigation systems. Thanks to Care Connect, you can call for help manually or automatically after an accident and access your vehicle remotely.

A useful feature of this system is traffic management. If there are traffic jams on your route, the system will suggest suitable alternative routes. In addition, the driver can find out about fuel prices at selected stations, availability at selected parking lots, as well as current news and weather forecasts.

The second category of Care Connect is service and security communication services. One of its functions is an emergency call, which is triggered automatically when one of the devices that signal an incident, such as an airbag, is triggered. The car then automatically establishes a voice and digital connection with the alarm center, providing the necessary information about the collision.

The emergency call to the car can also be activated by people in the car. Just click the button located in the header. Similarly, you can call for help in the event of a car breakdown.

There is also a car service option to help you plan your maintenance schedule. Before the upcoming inspection date, the authorized service center will contact the owner of the car to agree on a convenient date for the visit.

The Care Connect system also provides remote access to the vehicle via the Skoda Connect smartphone app. In this way, the driver can remotely receive information such as the state of the lighting, the amount of fuel in the tank, or whether the windows and doors are closed. And when searching for a car in crowded parking lots near shopping centers, the search function for a place will come in handy.
