The Audi A6 has replaced the generation of the last of the big German three. The Mercedes E-Class came out two years ago, and the BMW 5-Series in 2017. Therefore, they expected a breakthrough from the engineers from Ingolstadt - otherwise the pause would be difficult to explain. This breakthrough happened: the A6 has so many smart electronics that even the engineers themselves have not yet remembered how it all turns on, works and configures.

The front bumper (yes, it's best to take care of it from day one) is littered with all sorts of sensors and cameras. The most important unit here is a four-beam lidar, which scans the area in front of the car. This is such an important element in Audi's artificial intelligence system that it was equipped with washer nozzles on both sides.

Nearby is another radar that looks far ahead. “He is not entitled to injectors - he is able to work correctly even when dirty,” one of the engineers explained.

A peephole was built into the fourth ring - this is part of the night vision system. And while Mercedes might be quietly laughing at Audi for offering the option six years later, it's still very expensive. Below is the parking camera (yes, the A6 still has a huge hood), and next to it is the parking sensors. The Germans did not specify how all these complex systems will work in conditions when the body is flooded with reagents, non-freezing for 100 rubles is continuously poured from the nozzles, and the lidar is covered with ice for the second week. But around Porto, the electronics are working as promised at the press conference.

In fact, you can already drive Audi without hands - it focuses on information from navigation and knows when to slow down, where to accelerate, and where it is worth looking around and scanning the space several times. Now the A6 is limited only at the legislative level - the Europeans still have not decided who will be responsible for the accident with the autopilot and, in general, whether robots should be released on the roads without restrictions. That is why, instead of the "Autopilot" button, Audi still has a lurid plug.

Instead, the A6 offers several packages of assistants (by the way, they are displayed in a separate menu item, which is controlled by a physical button): "Basic", "Individual" and "Maximum". Even when all the options are activated, Audi is still embarrassed to say: "Come on, me myself?" She democratically asks to put your hands on the steering wheel, warns if you are distracted, and generally fuss too much.

But we know that Audi is capable of more. About a year ago, David Hakobyan tested fully autonomous A7s on the German Autobahn - well, as he tested, he just sat and watched the car do everything by itself.

The heap of electronics is unlikely to become a defining advantage in Russia, unless all these assistants are in the basic version. We look, first of all, at the design, but here Audi was not surprised. "Six" is still difficult to distinguish from another sedan with four rings, unless you are a fan of the brand, you used to have an Audi, or you work for a service.

Strict lines, straight stamping, a huge radiator grille - we have already seen all this in its predecessor. From afar, the new A6 will be given out only by the new matrix headlights, in which the LED daytime running lights shine. The sedan looks incredibly stylish, monumental, but without a twist - the designers change at Audi, but the style remains the same. Another thing is that the flashy appearance, which the Koreans and the Japanese have carried away in recent years, are definitely not suitable for cars from Ingolstadt.

But the technical part of the Audi A6 is full of news. Here is the new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system (don't be alarmed, you will hardly notice the difference) and as many as four suspension options, and changes with the motors, albeit not grandiose, have also occurred. The main revelation for me personally is the lack of a basic four-cylinder gasoline engine.

For several months now I have been turning around on a C7 with 1,8 TFSI (190 hp) and even calculating the trade-in surcharge. In the urban cycle, faster than 7,9 s to 100 km / h is not necessary, and four-wheel drive in Moscow is a need for only a few days a year. So, the "six" in the same body, taking into account dealer discounts, can be found for $ 28-$ 011. It will be a well-equipped sedan: with a leather interior, a rear-view camera, a separate climate and, if you're lucky, an electric boot lid.

But Audi decided to abandon the low-power "four", and at first they will bring 3,0 TFSI (340 hp) to Russia. Yes, and we have already seen this motor on the previous generation, only with a different firmware - there it produced 333 hp. Dealers also have such cars, only the price tag for them starts (taking into account the same discounts) from $ 45 to $ 318.

The A6 will also have a three-liter turbodiesel, but it is not yet clear how much power. On the test in Portugal, there were cars in 284-horsepower, but for Russia such an engine is most likely derated to a tax rate of 249 hp. Audi in Europe will also offer a junior diesel version - 2,0 liters and 204 hp. Russia is not yet talking about the prospects for such a version.

By the way, now all "sixes" have received indices on the trunk lid - they depend on the engine size and power. For example, in the case of a 340-horsepower sedan we are talking about the figure "55", and the three-liter turbodiesel received the index "50". In general, if an Audi with numbers more than 50 is next to you, then it is better not to participate in traffic light races with it.

On the serpentines in the vicinity of Porto, the sedan with 3,0 TFSI and a seven-speed "robot" S tronic is ready to roll old asphalt into a roll - on short straight lines, the "six" easily gains 120-130 km / h, and at the entrance to the turn does not even squeak with tires. This engine is extremely good at highway speeds: the power headroom is so big that just a little bit more and the A6 will turn into something more.

There are no complaints about the V6 diesel engine, which works with the classic eight-band "automatic" from ZF, but still I expected a little more. If the Q7 with the same engine and gearbox lulls with amazing smoothness, imperceptible shifting and a huge reserve of traction, then the A6 feels a bit of a mismatch. Most likely, the matter is in the inflated expectations after the Q7 - it seemed that the diesel sedan should be even softer and faster, but the idyll was slightly disturbed by a different weight distribution and 20-inch wheels.

I deliberately started with lidars, suspensions and motors and did not say a word about the interior of the new Audi A6. If you are tired of sedans from Ingolstadt that are too similar to each other, then just look into the salon of the new "six":

Inside, the A6 has three displays at once, two of which are touch-sensitive.

If you have driven or continue to drive an Audi, then the new "six" will be the best continuation of your career. She is good at everything: very quiet, powerful, technically advanced and stylish, and she also has an incredible interior. The A6 offers too much in one car: autopilot (okay, almost autopilot), great dynamics, and a bunch of useful electronics. Another thing is that outwardly it has not changed as much as its competitors. But it seems that it is for this that they love her.
