Underrated arrangement

Underrated arrangement The exhaust system is considered by many users as a secondary node, but it is not.

Technical and automotive experts explain

The exhaust system is considered by many users to be a minor component that removes exhaust gases from the engine and is often damaged when driving fast over rough terrain.

In practice, the exhaust is as important as other components of the car. This is a technically complex system that performs many important functions. First of all, its task is the effective removal of exhaust gases for the outlines of the car body. Secondly, it reduces the noise associated with the exit of exhaust gases from the engine head, which is done by two, sometimes three mufflers. Finally, thirdly, the exhaust system cleans the exhaust gases from harmful chemicals that should not enter the atmosphere.

In addition, in some drive units, due to the appropriate orientation of the channels of the exhaust system, the compressor rotor is set in motion, which is then called a turbocharger.

It is worth remembering about the system passing under the floor of the car, which is subjected to constant contact with various aggressive substances from the environment, as well as corrosive products contained in the car exhaust. In addition, it is subject to mechanical damage caused by stones or hard obstacles. Another factor that has a devastating effect on this group is the temperature difference between the hot metal and the environment, such as when walking through a puddle. Exhaust systems, even the most expensive ones, are subject to corrosive wear. The corrosion process occurs inside the muffler and proceeds most rapidly when the vehicle is not used for a long time and water condenses inside the muffler. Due to these conditions, the life of the exhaust system is limited, typically 4-5 years or 80-100 km. Diesel exhaust systems have a somewhat longer service life.

The starting point of the exhaust system is the manifold located in the engine head. This system is related to the engine, copies its movements and additionally generates its own vibrations, therefore it must be connected to the body with elastic elements, which are one of the guarantees of its long-term operation. Fastening of individual elements between themselves or with exhaust pipes should be carried out using twisted clamps using appropriate washers and shock-absorbing and spacer gaskets.

In fact, users are reminded of the exhaust system when holes in the mufflers and leaky connections increase the noise level of its operation. Driving with a leaky system can have serious consequences for the health and life of the driver and passengers. It should be emphasized that exhaust gases entering the car in various ways can cause headaches, malaise, decreased concentration, and sometimes cause accidents.

Therefore, the replacement of exhaust system components should be carried out in professional workshops using original spare parts and using assembly techniques recommended by car manufacturers.
