Starter malfunctions

Starter malfunctions A working battery is not enough to start the engine. A working starter is also required.

In the summer season, minor faults are not visible, but with the onset of frost, they clearly make themselves felt.

Most drivers use the starter several times a day, so they should notice any malfunction in this system. Too slow a starter or excessive noise should prompt us to urgently contact a mechanic, because delay can only increase costs.

The starter speed may be too low for several reasons. The first is a bad battery. If it turns out to be good, and the starter turns badly, it does not need to be removed and repaired immediately. It often happens that the electrical system is to blame. Bad contact or damage Starter malfunctions the conductor increases the losses during the flow of current and thereby reduces the speed of rotation. First check the connections and if they are dirty, unscrew them, clean and protect with special products. You should also check the tightness of the nuts and bolts securing the wires. If the battery and cables are in good condition and the starter motor is still hard to turn, the starter motor is probably defective and needs to be removed from the vehicle.

The reason for the greater resistance may be the wear of the rotor bearings and friction against the housing. It may also happen that there is no engagement with the flywheel. Then the fault lies with the clutch system.

On the other hand, if the starter does not start after turning the key, this may indicate worn or clogged brushes. Temporary fix - knocking in the starter housing. This may help, but not always. This is a temporary repair and you should contact a service center as soon as possible. If the starter does not hum and the lights go out after turning the key, this may indicate a short circuit in the winding.

Very rarely, but there is also damage to the flywheel ring gear. This may be due to working teeth or a loose rim on the wheel. To eliminate such a defect, it is necessary to remove the gearbox and disassemble the clutch. Unfortunately, the cost of such a repair is about PLN 500 plus the price of a new disc.

The cost of repairing the starter is not high, so if you have to replace the brushes, you should immediately carry out a full inspection, additionally replacing the bushings and rolling the collector. Then we are sure that it will serve us for a long time. If you try to replace only the brushes, then it may turn out that the repair will not be effective, since the new brushes on the uneven surface of the collector will not fit well, and the current will be insufficient. The cost of repairing starters for typical car models ranges from PLN 80 to a maximum of PLN 200, depending on the amount of repair and materials required. Instead of repairing your own starter and wasting time, you can replace it with a remanufactured one. For popular passenger cars, it costs from PLN 150 to approximately PLN 300 with the return of the old one. This is several times less than for the new ASO.
