In a modern car, it is impossible to refuse electronic controllers that control many functions. The poor quality of electronic devices has a significant impact on unexpected car breakdowns. When using a car, you should pay attention to the control lamps that signal a breakdown. For example, the red indicator lights up 
"Engine damage" can be caused by banal chafing of the wire that receives impulses from the lambda probe. The lack of information about the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases measured by the lambda probe causes malfunctions in the engine injection system, which is a more serious problem.
It is also worth keeping an eye on the car and not neglecting the noticed damage. For example, a missing speedometer (cable break) can cause the engine to stall because the fuel injection control system is not aware that the vehicle is moving. The electronic control system "thinks" that the car is stationary, and selects another, smaller dose of fuel, which is not enough to start off.
Finding and repairing defects is often time-consuming and, worse, requires the use of specialized equipment. The respective device testers have authorized workshops and have to pay dearly for finding a defect.
When deciding whether to buy a new or used car, you should pay attention to the quality of electronic components. Some automakers, wanting to save money, buy cheap electronic components. A good car brand is not always a guarantee of quality, although, of course, it should be. Even the prestigious BMW 8 Series had big electronic problems in the 90s. The reliability of Japanese vehicles such as Toyota and Honda comes from the low failure rate of electronics, not just mechanical components.
The older the car, the less electronic devices it has. Fortunately for users, the quality of "car electronics" is constantly improving.
