Nio: Nio ET150 7 kWh batteries - and other models - based on solid-state cells. In less than two years

Nio has unveiled its new Nio ET7 electric limousine. He also revealed details about the upcoming 150 kWh battery that will be installed in cars delivered from the fourth quarter of 2022. The Chinese manufacturer is surprised: it must be solid electrolyte batteries.

Shortly before the presentation of the new Nio ET7, the president of the company spoke about the battery, which should be sold at the end of 2022. To increase specific energy by 2020 percent (2022-> 50 kWh) over two years (end 100 -> end 150), Nio wants to use solid electrolyte cellswhich [will?] are currently available for production.

The industry claims that there are no such links and that they won't be available until the second half of the decade. Initial versions yes, but not commercially available products. But Nio has partnered with ProLogium since August 2019, which unveiled what was supposed to be a solid-state battery prototype in early 2020. Therefore it is possible that Nio wants to use ProLogium cells.

But why at the end of 2022, when the Taiwanese manufacturer announced that it would receive the product as early as 2020?

Solid electrolyte in Nio batteries it must be hybrid, liquid-solid and only solidify in the battery. The anode of the cells will be made of a mixture of carbon and silicon, so it is not much different from modern anodes of lithium-ion cells. The cathode, in turn, should be rich in nickel and will be covered with a casing that reminds us of Samsung SDI graphene cells.

The opening of Samsung SDI suits us in terms of power: the South Korean manufacturer spoke about 0,37 kWh / kg at 25 degrees Celsius, Nio promises 0,36 kWh / kg.... The best liquid electrolyte cells we know reach around 0,3 kWh / kg, so Nio wants to increase the capacity by 20 percent in less than two years.

Thanks to the new battery with a capacity of 150 kWh, the cars of the Chinese manufacturer achieve:

  • new Nio ES8 – 850 NEDC units, i.e. up to 660 kilometers in kind in mixed mode,
  • Nio ES6 Performance – 900 NEDC units, i.e. up to 700 kilometers in kind in mixed mode,
  • Nio EC6 Performance – 910 NEDC units, i.e. up to 705 kilometers in kind in mixed mode,
  • No ET7 – more than 1 NEDC, i.e. up to 770-780 kilometers in kind in mixed mode [all calculations of real ranges, preliminary and estimated, are highly dependent on the version of the testing procedure used].

Battery Change Stations 2.0

On the occasion of the car's premiere, Nio also shared some news about the battery change station. New version of the building, Power plant 2.0supposed to store 13 ready-made batteries... Cars should be able to enter it automatically (reverse parking), and changing the battery, as we know from other sources, should take 5-10 minutes.

If we assume that it will be an average of 7,5 minutes, we can easily calculate that a modern electrician will add up to ten kilowatt-hours of energy during this time, so that he will restore the maximum range of 50-70 kilometers. Meanwhile, a fully charged battery provides a range of several hundred kilometers.

Nio currently has 177 stations in China since launch. 1,49 million battery replacements.
