Nissan: Leafa batteries will last up to a car 10-12 years - they will last for 22 years

How long does it take to replace batteries in an electric vehicle? Nissan announced at Automotive News Europe that Leaf batteries should last 22 years. This number was estimated by analyzing an already moving fleet of 400 2011 copies of the model. The car has been sold in Europe since the year XNUMX.

Francisco Carranza, Managing Director of Renault-Nissan's Energy Services segment, has estimated that an electric vehicle will remain on the market for 10 to 12 years, and that batteries will outlive it by the same amount (source). Indeed, in developed countries, the car is used on average for 8-12 years - but not in Poland. According to the calculations of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the average age of a car in Poland is 17,2 years. In Europe, no one lives worse than us.

The representative of the Renault-Nissan concern also said that the manufacturer will gladly take "old", "used" batteries. They work well as small or large energy storage devices. In addition, the Nissan Leaf in Germany, Denmark and the UK can function as an energy supplier, meaning it can be plugged into a two-way power socket for, for example, households.

It is worth adding that "Old" and "Used" batteries are those cells that have reached approximately 70 percent of their original capacity.. They are not capable of delivering maximum power from the factory - so they are not suitable for cars where sometimes you need to accelerate a lot - but they can easily be used as an energy storage device at home where demand does not grow too quickly. The technology for the production of lithium-ion cells is so advanced today that almost all electric vehicle manufacturers offer an 8-year or 160-kilometer warranty.
