Nissan IDx is the return of the Datsun 1600 | video

The concept car is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives the rear wheels. Company insiders say it could fill a void to the left of the Nissan 200SX exit and be cheaper alternative to the Nissan 370Z.

Nissan says many of the IDx designers were people who "grew up playing racing games" and fell in love with the iconic Datsun 1600, which is older than many of the people who designed the IDx.

The original Datsun 1600 was a favorite among professional racers and rally enthusiasts due to its agile frame, powerful engine and rear wheel drive chassis.

Nissan hasn't confirmed the IDx will go into production, but if the early reaction to the car at the show is a benchmark, the Japanese company will be encouraged by the positive response.

We hope the modern Datsun 1600 gets the green light faster than the Nissan GT-R. Nissan introduced the GT-R concept in 2001, but the production version was not released until the end of 2007.
