Nissan Leaf: Report shows this car will die, but will return as an electric SUV

The Nissan Leaf is one of the pioneers in the world of Nissan electric vehicles. However, the car will disappear, making way for a small electric SUV that could arrive in 2025.

The Nissan Leaf will no longer be in this world, but fear not, according to a new report published on Monday, October 18, the car will receive a successor in the form of a small electric SUV. Citing comments from Nissan's head of European operations, Guillaume Cartier, the report says the Leaf replacement SUV will arrive in 2025 as part of plans to continue car production in the UK.

What is not clear is how this could affect the United States and North America. Of course, if Nissan plans to drop the hatchback for Europe, it will do the same for the United States. SUVs are still the best in this market. Nissan did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Today, Nissan is building the Leaf in Tennessee, as well as in the UK and Japan.

What effect does the disappearance of the present Leaf have?

The news makes a lot of sense if Nissan confirms the change for the United States. The Leaf doesn't sell very well in the United States. Experian data shows that just 10,238 Leaf electric vehicles were registered in the first eight months of this year. That compares to 22,799 and the Tesla Model Y. Of course, Nissan could forego replacing the Leaf and rely on the Ariya SUV to fuel its EV efforts in North America. It's still not entirely clear.

And the Nissan Aria?

As for Nissan, this year Nissan delayed the launch of the electric SUV until 2022 due to a shortage of semiconductor chips. The first cars were supposed to go on sale already, but instead we'll see the car launch early next year as it is.
