Nissan Leaf with TMS - when? And why is the new Nissan Leaf (2018) still missing TMS? [update] • CARS

TMS is an active battery temperature management system. In other words: active cooling system. Batteries in heat give away energy better, but when the temperature is too high, their degradation accelerates rapidly. Why doesn't the Nissan Leaf (2018) have a TMS - and when will it? Here is the answer.

Table of contents

  • Nissan Leaf with TMS only in 2019
      • LG Chem cells instead of AESC
    • Nissan Leaf (2019) - a brand new car?

Nissan Leaf models up to 2017 use 24 kilowatt hours (kWh) or 30 kilowatt hours of batteries. All cells are manufactured by Automotive Energy Supply Corporation, AESC for short (more on this in the article New Nissan e-NV200 (2018) with a 40 kWh battery).

AESC cells do not have extensive temperature monitoring systemsthat could be connected to an Active Cooling System (TMS). This means that if the temperature is too high - for example in summer or when driving on the motorway - the battery can be used up faster than expected.

LG Chem cells instead of AESC

The TMS system can be combined with better, more compact, but also more expensive LG Chem NCM 811 batteries (which means NCM 811 can be found in the article about battery production technologies here).

According to the calculations LG Chem cells must appear in the Nissan Leaf (2019) 60 kWh modelbecause only they guarantee a sufficient energy density (over 729 watt hours per liter). Batteries with a lower energy density would not allow 60 kWh to be crammed into the battery space of the new Leaf, they simply would not fit in it!

This is not the end of AESC's disadvantages. Due to the older production technology and the lack of a temperature management system (TMS), the charging speed is limited to 50 kilowatts (kW). Only with LG Chem cells and active cooling will it be possible to achieve the 150 kW mentioned at the time by Nissan.

Nissan Leaf (2019) - a brand new car?

Or so Nissan Leaf (2019) at the turn of 2018/2019 will use the WOW effect of new batteries (60 kWh) and longer range (340 instead of 241 kilometers) to attract customers:

… Or also unexpectedly, a Nissan Leaf Nismo or a redesigned, aggressive and sporty car in the shape of the IDS Concept will appear on the market:
