Nissan Patrol GR Wagon 3.0 By Elegance

What criterion for a real SUV has been known for a long time. A body with a chassis, an off-road chassis with rigid axles (front and rear), four-wheel drive and at least a gearbox. Nissan went even further and added a rear differential lock and switchable rear stabilizer to the Patrol, which provide a more flexible rear axle and therefore easier traversing of difficult terrain.

Features that you will never find in modern SUVs. First of all, things that require the user to have at least some prior knowledge before using them. For example, four-wheel drive and gearbox can be linked manually, that is, mechanically. Only free-flow hubs are automatically turned on. However, in emergencies, this can also be manually activated. The rear differential lock is slightly more advanced. The switch is located on the dashboard, the switch is electromagnetic. The same goes for turning off the rear stabilizer. But while the electromagnetic on and off mode ensures that there is no mechanical damage, it is helpful to know when to use the two and when not.

This is what Patrol is already calling for off-roaders rather than off-roaders. Finally, the distinctly off-road, almost boxy exterior that has long attracted many also speaks volumes. And a spacious interior that can be comfortable, but by no means as ergonomic as SUVs. The switches are in no logical sequence, the steering wheel is height-only adjustable, the driver and front passenger sit pressed against the door despite the large width - the space in the middle requires an off-road transmission - and last but not least. Despite the fact that there is room for seven passengers, they will really comfortably accommodate only four. Nissan has paid too little attention to the third passenger in the middle bench, while rear passengers (in the third row) will mostly complain about space.

But let's be honest, the Patrol, which has to deduct 11.615.000 tolars, combined with the richest equipment package (Elegance), will not be bought by people who have to carry six other passengers a day - they will prefer to go to the Decently equipped Mutivana 4Motion - but for people who like the reliability and power that GR emits. And if you're not that kind of person, you'd better forget about him.

In the morning, when you turn the key and start the engine, the patrol calls right behind the truck. The 3-liter diesel engine, which replaced the 0-liter turbodiesel in 1999, already had direct injection (Di), four valves per cylinder and two camshafts. The most unusual thing is that the unit is not six-cylinder, like most of its kind, but four-cylinder. The reason is simple. For the Patrol, Nissan has developed a working engine that delivers torque and sporty performance. Thus, the engine had an above average stroke (2 mm) and a torque of 8 Nm in the 102 rpm range.

There is probably no need to specifically explain what this means. Among other things, it practically does not matter in which gear you turn on (first, second or third), that during overtaking Patrol rarely requires switching to a lower gear, that even with steep climbs, intervention in the operation of the gearbox is practically not required (except for cases when the car is not extra loaded) due to the relatively high power (118 kW / 160 hp) that the unit achieves at a favorable 3.600 rpm, and highway travel can be quite fast and comfortable.

But if you're buying an SUV and thinking about Patrol, we advise you to think again. The Patrol is a comfortable SUV, but please don't compare it to the comfort typical of SUVs.

evaluation

  • One thing's for sure: The Patrol GR is the latest full-blooded maxi-SUV - only the Land Cruiser 100 is close to it - and those who swear by such vehicles will surely appreciate it. Otherwise, you should avoid it. Not in a big circle, admittedly (Patrol can be comfortable), but it's still true that there are also much more suitable "quasi" SUVs, also known as SUVs, for covering distances quickly on well-maintained European motorways.
