Nissan plans to go fully electric by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2050.

The Japanese automobile company Nissan has announced plans to become an environmentally friendly car company dedicated exclusively to the production of electric vehicles in the coming decades.

Green cars are the future, but how quickly this initiative will materialize is still a matter of debate. However, it is setting itself high goals, aiming to become fully electric and carbon neutral in the coming decades.

Nissan knows how difficult it is to make big changes in the automotive industry. This way you put a reasonable quantifier on your target. The company said in a statement that its goal is to become all-electric in key markets by the early 2030s. If all goes according to plan, Nissan hopes to be carbon neutral by the 2050s.

“We are determined to help create a carbon neutral society and accelerate global efforts to combat climate change,” Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said in a press release. “Our electrified vehicle offering will continue to expand globally and will make an important contribution to Nissan becoming carbon neutral. We will continue to innovate that enrich people's lives as we strive for a sustainable future for all."

What are the difficulties in reaching the goal?

The efforts of the Japanese manufacturer are commendable and in some ways even necessary. States like California have led the fight against climate change by banning the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035. So Nissan shouldn't have too much trouble offering an all-electric range in green markets and big cities.

Obvious difficulties will arise with the delivery of these futuristic vehicles to rural areas. Most all-electric cars are expensive, and installing a home charger can be quite expensive. In addition, there are currently no public charging stations in these rural areas.

However, some argue that public charging stations are not critical. Meanwhile, other companies have helped revitalize the production of these electric vehicle charging networks in the US.

What electric vehicles does Nissan already offer?

Unsurprisingly, Nissan is one of the first companies to announce its environmental intentions. After all, it was the first automaker to mass market an all-electric car when the Leaf debuted in 2010.

Since then, Nissan has stepped up its efforts. For example, the company recently introduced the all-electric Re-Leaf ambulance.

In addition, the manufacturer will introduce its second 2022 Nissan Ariya electric car later this year.

Having just two pint-sized electric models is far from the full range of electric vehicles, and you shouldn't expect the Leaf or Ariya to light up the sales chart in 2021.

Nissan will launch three new models in China this year, including the all-electric Ariya. And the company will release at least one new electric or hybrid car every year until 2025.

If it can remain profitable by making these models available to the consumer, it could lead the industry in the next decade. While this is easier said than done, the automaker is well ahead of its competitors.
