Nissan Terrano II - a champion in the field, a computer scientist in life?

Nissan is a brand that unfortunately has no luck with companies. In the 12th century, his cooperation with Renault did not end well - the quality of the cars produced fell sharply and the brand's image suffered considerably. A prime example of this is Primera P.

However, the Japanese manufacturer has already stated a relatively dubious brand image earlier, for example, in the case of the Terrano II SUV.

The joint venture with Ford resulted in two models: the aforementioned Terrano II and the Ford Maverick. However, this cooperation was quite specific - almost the entire burden of developing the car fell on the shoulders of Nissan, and Ford acted as a sponsor - "he gave money."

The initial period of sales of both models showed that only one of them would do well in the market - Nissan was not only better in price, but also offered much better warranty conditions. So the Nissan SUV sold unexpectedly well, and the Ford Maverick, albeit in this form, remained in production until 2000, when its successor appeared, but it did not have a dizzying career and, in fact, turned out to be Ford's wrong investment. .

Returning to the Terrano II, the car featured impressive off-road capabilities - a body mounted on a frame, independent front wheel suspension, an armored and durable rigid axle at the rear, rear-wheel drive with a reduction gear. and impressive ground clearance - all this made the descent from hard ground into forest air ducts for a spacious Nissan not a big problem.

Unfortunately, the excellent off-road qualities had a negative effect on the stability of the car when driving fast on the roads. Due to the high and narrow body, high ground clearance, soft suspension, large curb weight and completely unsuitable brake system (too small discs), driving at speeds above the permitted ones turned out to be not only unpleasant, but also relatively dangerous. .

Interior? Very roomy, with a large trunk, which in addition to the five-door version is equipped with an additional "sandwich", which can carry two additional passengers. True, the ride comfort on these seats is almost zero, but if necessary, it's nice to know that the car can carry up to seven people for short distances.

However, this is where the list of advantages of the Terrano II salon, unfortunately, ends. The cabin may be spacious, but the workmanship is far from Japanese standards. Bad plastics, poor quality upholstery, crappy seat mounts - the list is really long. True, the latest models, i.e. released after the last modernization in 1999, they look much better in this matter, but they are still far from ideal.

Drives? The choice is relatively small and is limited to one petrol and three diesels. Recommended units? The choice is not so easy...

The 2.4-liter gasoline engine produces only 118 - 124 hp. This is definitely not enough for a car weighing 1600 - 1700 kg. Power shortage is detected not only on the road, but also in the field. It is true that the drive is solid and not very problematic, but what if its economy and driving pleasure are at a meager level.

So the diesels stay. Unfortunately, in this case the matter is also surprisingly clear. It is true that there are three engines to choose from: 2.7 TDI 100 km, 2.7 TDI 125 km and 3.0 Di 154 km, but each of them has some "flaws". The turbocharger suddenly fails on a 2.7-liter unit, which is also very expensive. The 3.0 Di engine is not only expensive to buy, but also very sensitive to the quality of the diesel fuel used. Therefore, mechanics recommend replacing the fuel filter when changing engine oil (good quality). To sum it up, a properly maintained 3.0 Di seems to be the most reasonable choice.

Unfortunately, the Nissan Terrano II, made in Barcelona, is a car that breaks out of the image of a “real Japanese”. This is evidenced not only by Dekra reports, but also by the comments of the users themselves. Frequent failures in electronics and switches, unstable clutch, emergency turbochargers, weak brakes - these are just some of the common ailments of a Japanese roadster. Add to this the high prices for parts and the high fees due to the large engine capacities, it turns out that the Nissan Terrano II is a car that should be recommended, but only to people who love the model, who can accept its capricious nature and the resulting high maintenance costs. service.
