Illuminated car license plate

Mercedes-Benz has developed an innovative license plate capable of illuminating itself, making it more visible than conventional license plates. The advantage is an electrically controlled fluorescent aluminum film with a thickness of a few millimeters (EL).

It is located behind a traditional plate, but also made of transparent film. The result is an evenly clean light diffuser visible from afar, which becomes an important safety feature at the rear of the vehicle. In addition, the clear film has a coating that also reflects the headlights of the following vehicles.

The new illuminated license plate removes the need for the bulbs needed for night identification of traditional license plates. Mercedes has applied for homologation for this nameplate, but we do not know if it has ever been used.
