New Toyota Rav4 steals F-150 from America's best-selling car list

The new Toyota RAV4 combines technology, design and performance. Its composition made it one of the favorite cars of Americans, managing to take first place in sales of the Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck in the US for decades. It is also the best selling car in the country. But that seems to have changed drastically as a new car registration in early 2021 showed the Ford F-150 trailing the Toyota RAV4.

Its popularity is reflected in Ford and F-150 sales figures. Experian has reviewed new vehicle registrations in the first quarter of the last few years. Ford was the most registered brand in 2017, 2018 and 2019 with 14%, 13.8% and 13.6% of registrations respectively.

In 2020, Ford and Toyota were close to even. Ford had 12.8% and Toyota 12.9%. However, there was a change in registrations for 2021. Toyota ranked first in the first quarter with 13.7% of new registrations. Ford had 12.1% over the same period.

Each of these years, the F-150 has been the top-registered Ford vehicle in the first quarter; however, it has been declining in the last two years. It remained stable in 2017 (3.3%), 2018 (3.3%) and 2019 (3.4%). The fall began in 2020 (3.1%) and 2021 (2.7%). However, the F-150 is still the top truck, outperforming both the Ram 1500 and the Chevrolet Silverado.

Toyota RAV4 steals first place

Part of Toyota's growth comes from the RAV4, which has seen tremendous growth in recent years. In 2017, it accounted for 2.1% of new car registrations in the first quarter, placing it in sixth place. This figure increased to 2.2% in 2018 and 2019 and to 2.9% in 2020 and 2021. With this rise, the Toyota RAV4 stole the top spot from the F-150 for the first time.

The RAV4 isn't Toyota's only popular vehicle. The automaker took first place in the first quarter of 2021. Toyota is the dominant leading passenger car brand among new registrations in the first quarter of 2021, filling the spot that Ford has held for many years. With 5 of the top 11 new model registrations, it might be difficult to dislodge Toyota for a while.

Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Highlander joined the RAV4 as the top 11 registered vehicles in the first quarter of 2021.

What the 4 Toyota RAV2021 Offers

While US News ranks sixth on its 2021 compact SUV list, it highlights the Toyota RAV4's refined interior, remarkable fuel economy and well-balanced performance. In addition, the RAV4 received the 2021 Best Compact Family SUV award from US News.

Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 203 hp. economical, but a bit noisy. There are also hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The RAV4 has ample room for passengers and cargo, and a good list of standard tech and safety features. The interior of the RAV4 is finished with high quality materials.

A 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard, but an 8.0-inch screen is available. Also standard are Apple CarPlay and , a Wi-Fi hotspot, a USB port, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo and Bluetooth. Navigation, four additional USB ports, wireless device charging, an 11-speaker audio system and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster are available.

Other features available include proximity keyless entry, push button start, and a regular sunroof or panoramic sunroof. The six models available include two off-road options.

Both the Ford F-150 and the Toyota RAV4 are great cars that continue to be popular with buyers. Everyone will have to keep an eye on whether the RAV4 will remain in the first place in the future.
