Tesla's new software 2020.16: add-ons, trivia, in Europe, rather without a revolution when it comes to autopilot / FSD • ELECTRIC CARS

Tesla has released the latest software version, designated 2020.16. The changes are minor: the ability to format a USB drive for camera needs, a reorganized toy box, and power filtering of nearby charging stations. When it comes to traffic light behavior, you shouldn't expect a revolution in Europe.

    • Where did the software version numbers come from?

Since April, Tesla owners have received new firmware versions 2020.12.x - now mostly options 2020.12.11.x: 2020.12.11.1 and 2020.12.11.5 (TeslaFi data), which allowed cars to slow down and stop at traffic lights and STOP signs. The function is called Traffic and Brake Light Control (BETA).

However, this is true of the United States. As our Readers, who received the aforementioned updates in Poland, declare, the car sees traffic cones, interprets traffic lights correctly, "Gives the impression" that he will be able to withstand a stop at an intersection with a red traffic light.but the mechanism doesn't work. And while it will not work in Europe.

In turn, a few days ago, the following software version flashed on the radars: 2020.16... This was the opportunity filtration of nearby stations at maximum charging power (Nearest charging stations) - this uses the 3 lightning symbol. Unspecified "minor improvements" also appeared on Maps.

The camera control system now has a function formatting the USB stick for videos recorded in the car, with automatic creation of the corresponding folders. Toybox, the space for gadgets and games, has also been redesigned.

Where did the software version numbers come from?

Since we were asked if we know what the numbers in the software versions mean, let's try to answer them using the example of firmware 2020.12.11.5. This is more of an assumption than an official piece of information, but we expect it to be largely true as it follows the logic used by developers in other projects:

  • first number, 2020. 12.11.5 - the year of completion of work, often coincides with the year of release of the firmware, with slippage when jerking, for example 2019/2020; this could be the year the new revision was created in version control,
  • second issue, 2020.12. 11.5 - a large number of software versions, this can mean a week of the year; it symbolizes major changes, although they are not always visible from the outside; numbers usually jump by a few or a dozen numbers, for example, 2020.12 -> 2020.16, at least in the versions that are published; usually even numbers are used (2020.8 -> 2020.12 -> 2020.16)so odd can be reserved as standard for informal, domestic,
  • third issue, 2020.12.11.5 – a smaller version number of the software, most often it is the previous version (for example, 8-> 11) with bug fixes; even and odd numbers, sometimes consecutive numbers are used, e.g. 2019.32.11 -> 2019.32.12.
  • fourth issue, 2020.12.11.5 - another version (branch or improvement) of version 11, possibly with the correction of minor errors of the previous version on a specific vehicle fleet; As you might guess, the more options this software has, the more important it is for the manufacturer, since it is adapted for more cars.
