Land Rover gears up for autonomous off-road adventures

Almost everyone has heard of Google's autonomous cars cruising the San Francisco Bay Area, but what about robotic cars that drive off-road? Hold that thought, because Land Rover is working on a fleet of 100 off-road-ready autonomous tractors. The Land Rover concept isn't as outlandish as it sounds; the goal is not to completely replace the driver, but to provide enhanced technology support. To make this possible, Rover is teaming up with Bosch to develop state-of-the-art sensor and computing power.

Increased torque with new socket technology

That's why Ingersoll Rand's new Powersocket system is so intriguing. The company claims that these sockets provide 50% more torque than standard impact sockets thanks to a unique design that increases the power output of the tool. This helps to pull out even the most stubborn bolts.

Uber ready to take on trucking

Uber recently acquired, or better said, swallowed up autonomous truck company Otto. The company now plans to enter the trucking market as a freight carrier and industry technology partner. What sets Uber apart is its plan to introduce semi-autonomous features that will eventually lead to fully autonomous trucks. Uber sells its trucks to shippers, fleets and independent truck drivers. It also hopes to compete with brokers that link truck fleets and shippers.

VW plans to introduce dozens of new electric vehicles

Since its diesel fiasco, VW has been on bad terms with both environmentalists and the EPA. The company hopes to redeem itself by introducing dozens of new electric vehicles (30 by 2025). To kick things off, V-Dub will unveil the battery-powered ID concept car at the Paris Motor Show. This little subcompact is said to have twice the range of the Tesla Model 3. We'll be watching, VW.
