Noyle begins retooling scooters

Founded by three two-wheeler enthusiasts, young startup Noil is the first company to specialize in the electrification of gasoline-powered scooters.

Long idle, modernization is progressing in France. While Europe is currently studying the project submitted by the government, more and more companies are positioning themselves in this segment. While most of them are now focused on the electrification of four-wheeled vehicles, Noyle decided to specialize in a different area: two-wheelers and scooters in particular.

Kit subject to approval

Without going into the details of the proposed solution, a few weeks ago, the startup launched a request for quotation system on its website.

« In addition to collecting contacts, this allowed us to better define needs. Today 40% of requests are for models larger than 125 cc. ”Explains Clement FEO, co-founder and CEO of Noil.

What is the best way to define the configuration of kits that a startup will submit for approval. In this regard, the government's plan is quite simple. There is no question of entrusting the modernization to "geo-finds". Each actor will have to coordinate their uniforms with the teams of UTAC, the French organization responsible for certification. ” We'll have to present a prototype and prove the reproducibility of the process. Then UTAC will conduct annual audits. "Summarizes our interlocutor. The approval procedures are time consuming but also costly. Hence the importance of choosing the right configuration at the outset and ensuring that it meets the real need.

In practice, the kit offered by Noil will consist of a motor, a battery, a BMS, a controller, and various adaptation parts. ” For an equivalent 50, we will aim for a power of about 3 kW and approach 11 kW for a 125, choosing a nominal power of 10 kW. ”Explains Rafael SETBON, Noil Co-Founder and CTO. The side batteries, when launched, call a package of about 1,5 kWh for 50 equivalents and about 6 kWh for 125 equivalents. This provides autonomy for 50 and 100 kilometers, respectively.

« Our kits are designed to be as standard as possible. The goal is to achieve a conversion in one day. You come in the morning and leave in the evening. ”explains our interlocutor. ” Administratively, there is a change in the gray card. It is also necessary to change insurance "He completes.

The essence of the bike?

With regard to the electrification of motorcycles, the answer of our interlocutor is quite clear. “Today we are more focused on scooters for the simple reason that we focus mainly on the urban market. he explains. ” There is also a technical reason. The scooter is easier to upgrade than a motorcycle whose architecture is built around the engine. .

Tariffs to be determined

As for the price, Noyle doesn't have any information to tell us yet. ” Our costs are still being determined as we are in the process of selecting our suppliers. »Explains our interlocutor, who is thinking to offer rent and complete purchase formulas.

In terms of kit distribution, Noyle's first step will be to open an electrification center in the Paris area, in an area where demand is likely to be greatest. ” Second, we will rely on a network of partner auto repair shops previously trained and authorized by Noil to install our kits. »Explains Clément FLEO. ” This assumes that there is enough profit to be able to share it with the distributor. He warns.

Long months of waiting

Regarding the modernization proposal, Noyle is still awaiting a European decision confirming the implementation of the process in France.

« The return of the European Commission is scheduled for mid-February. There will inevitably be a small delay between their return and the publication of the decree, but also a modernization of the regulatory processes. ”He explains, not hoping to be able to equip his first customers before the end of the year.
