Your mirrors are definitely more fragile than windows, windshields or rear windows. They're thin, and the two side mirrors are threatened daily, from shopping carts in the parking lot to other cars. What happens if one is hacked? Is it necessary to change the whole thing?

Your options

First, if the glass is just cracked and not broken, you don't have to do anything (legally speaking). However, this interferes with your view and is a security risk.

Second, you can only replace the glass portion of most side view mirrors, not the entire body. Even with power mirrors, in most cases, only the glass can be replaced, although you'll probably want an experienced mechanic to handle this.

However, if the case itself has been damaged, you will need to replace it completely for safety reasons. Replacement side mirrors and housings aren't all that expensive, but they can be tricky to replace if you're not experienced in the area.

Be safe and replace it

By law, if you have two mirrors that provide an unobstructed view to the rear, you do not need to replace the mirror or housing. However, this is risky. As mentioned, a cracked mirror is already a safety hazard, and it only takes a small push to break it. Then you will be left without a mirror at all.

When all is said and done, it's best to stay safe. Side and rear view mirrors may not seem like much, but they are an integral part of your safety on the road and provide a more accurate view of other vehicles behind and to your side.
